Day at the Aquarium with my class

After my recent visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific with my class, I realized just how much there is to explore, especially when you're there with kids! While the original post touched on the interactive fun, I wanted to share some more in-depth tips and highlights to help other families or teachers plan their perfect trip focusing on those amazing kids' exhibits. First off, planning ahead makes a huge difference. The Aquarium can get busy, so I’d suggest arriving right when they open, especially if you want to experience the touch pools without long lines. My students absolutely loved getting to gently touch the stingrays in the Shark Lagoon. It's such a unique, hands-on learning experience that captivated them more than just observing from afar. They also have smaller pools where you can sometimes touch other creatures like sea stars. Don't miss the Pacific Visions exhibit, which is home to the immersive theater. We unfortunately missed the show, but I've heard it's fantastic for all ages, with a huge screen that really makes you feel like you're underwater. Check the showtimes as soon as you arrive! Throughout the aquarium, you'll find numerous smaller exhibits designed to engage young minds. My students were fascinated by the jellyfish displays – the way they glow and move is truly mesmerizing. We saw so many different kinds, from tiny pinkish-orange ones to huge bell-shaped ones! For slightly older kids, the areas featuring larger predators like the leopard shark and the sometimes elusive moray eel are always a hit. We spent a good amount of time trying to spot the moray eel peeking out from its rocky hideaway. It's a great opportunity to talk about camouflage and marine ecosystems. And speaking of ecosystems, the vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful fish are simply stunning. It’s a riot of color and movement, and you can point out different species, sparking conversations about biodiversity. One thing I highly recommend for kids is to pick up a scavenger hunt sheet or download their app before you go. It turns the visit into a fun mission, keeping them engaged and ensuring they don't miss some of the hidden gems, like the lobsters tucked away in their rocky habitats. My students loved finding the creatures on their lists. Practical tips: Wear comfy shoes – there's a lot of walking! Bring a reusable water bottle, as staying hydrated is key. There are cafes, but packing some snacks for little ones can save time and money. While we didn't have lunch there, I noticed several family-friendly dining options. If you're planning a "girls' day" like I am for my next visit, you might even consider exploring the nearby restaurants after. Overall, the Aquarium of the Pacific offers an incredible educational and entertaining experience for children of all ages. From the interactive touch pools to the awe-inspiring large tanks with sharks and countless fish, it's a place where curiosity thrives and marine life comes to life.
