Learning to garden
New to Lemon8!
I am new to gardening & didn’t start until a few years ago when we were lucky enough to build a dome greenhouse with a local non profit. At first we grew the plants they gave us. This year we only planted things we wanted to eat. The field mice also like to eat what we like & my cabbage & broccoli keep them distracted from the tomatoes.
I’m stellar at growing pumpkin, squash & cucumber leaves but not any actual fruit. The only thing I’ve had consistent success with is tomatoes. Adding marigolds in with the tomatoes has really helped.
Gardening can be both rewarding and challenging, especially for beginners. Familiarizing yourself with essential gardening techniques can make a huge difference. Starting with a vegetable garden, focusing on easy-to-grow crops, is a great way to build your confidence. Tomatoes are often a favorite as they thrive in various conditions, but consider incorporating companion plants like marigolds; they not only enhance growth but also deter harmful pests. It's beneficial to understand how to manage garden pests effectively. Field mice can be a nuisance, but using natural deterrents or creating barriers can help protect your precious crops. Additionally, consider raised beds or containers to minimize rodent access and improve soil quality. For a successful harvest, timing is crucial. Planting at the right time and ensuring proper spacing will allow plants to flourish. Don't hesitate to seek guidance from local gardening communities or resources online—sharing experiences and tips can enhance your gardening knowledge. Lastly, remember, every gardener experiences setbacks; use them as learning opportunities to improve your skills. Gardening is a journey, and with patience and practice, you'll enjoy the fruits of your labor!
