Alvord Desert Hot Springs - SE Oregon

The southeast corner of Oregon is so remote and rugged. Make the 7 hour drive from Portland to the Alvord Desert Hot Springs campground and stay in a converted shipping container bunker in the middle of the desert. No running water, no cell service, and no gas stations in sight. This is for the truly adventurous.

You can drive on the playa in the warmer season, soak in the natural hot springs, or hike in the Steens Mountains just across the road.

... Read moreVisiting the Alvord Desert Hot Springs felt like stepping into another world completely removed from modern life. The 7-hour drive from Portland through Oregon's remote southeast corner was part of the adventure itself – vast landscapes, sparse traffic, and a growing sense of solitude with every mile. Staying in the converted shipping container bunker was a unique experience. Without running water or cell service, it truly encouraged disconnecting and embracing nature's simplicity. I recommend bringing plenty of water and supplies, as the nearest gas stations and stores are far away. One of the highlights was soaking in the natural hot springs right in the desert. The warm mineral waters after a day of hiking were incredibly relaxing. I also enjoyed exploring the playa when conditions allowed; the alvord dry lake bed offers an expansive flat terrain perfect for driving or walking during warmer seasons. The proximity to the Steens Mountains added an extra layer to the trip. Just across the road, there are hiking trails that provide stunning views and an opportunity to explore diverse ecosystems — from desert floor to alpine meadows. For those considering visiting, check weather conditions carefully, especially in the colder months, as the playa can become muddy and difficult to navigate. Prepare for limited connectivity and embrace the peaceful isolation—you'll find it a refreshing break from city life. Overall, Alvord Desert Hot Springs offers a raw, off-the-grid adventure perfect for nature lovers and those seeking a unique camping and hiking experience in Oregon’s wild southeast.

For good reason, this is one of the most popular hot springs in Oregon. Located close to Crater Lake National Park, it is in Umpqua National Forest. The hike in is 1/4 mile but it is steep and short, so may not be suitable with improper footwear and young kiddos. Be sure to pay the $5 parking
