It’s common to come off a shift and find dozens of missed calls, unread messages, or emails waiting for us. For example, I’ve often seen my phone show 17 missed calls and over 130 unread emails after a long day in the sky. This digital backlog happens because our priority is ensuring passenger safety and delivering excellent service, which means we can’t always immediately respond to personal or work-related communications. Instead, we have to patiently catch up once the plane lands and connectivity is restored. To stay organized, I recommend flight crew members create specific routines to check messages during break times or after flights. This helps reduce the overwhelming feeling of catching up all at once. Using features such as priority inboxes or message filters can highlight the most urgent communications first. Also, leveraging offline apps and pre-downloaded content can keep us productive or entertained during flights without needing constant internet access. Overall, embracing airplane mode is an essential part of a flight attendant’s lifestyle—balancing presence in the moment with managing communications effectively when on the ground.
