Self-Reflection: Adulting in 2023
When I initially thought about 2023 I could only focus on the positive. I had completely forgotten that February through May was one of the most difficult times that I’ve experienced in my young adult life.
Looking back I remember being very stressed and anxious about how uncertain my living situation was. It was the first time in my life where I didn’t necessarily feel heard or fully supported by my family (specifically my parents which is difficult to admit) when I expressed my thoughts.
Absorbing so many different opinions on what types of decisions I should make was taking a toll on me, and at times resulted in me just trying to hold it together over lunch breaks in my car. I was frustrated to say the least.
Overall it was just a heavy time, and tears were shed, but ultimately I had to make a decision on what was best for me and my life despite what I was being told. I learned that adulting can be incredibly difficult, especially when you still want to be respectful of your parents but need to do what’s best for you to protect your peace.
I’m glad that I learned to trust myself and my own judgment.
I’m very thankful for my friends for listening to me vent and just for being there for me as I processed everything. I value the time that we get to hangout and do fun things with my friends. They helped make this year positive and memorable.
Despite a rocky start to the year, 2023 ended up not being too bad. I’m proud of the growth that I experienced in 2023, and I just hope that I can continue to grow and flourish in 2024.

Self-reflection as a young adult can genuinely feel like navigating a maze, right? One minute you're riding high, the next you're grappling with choices that feel monumental. Just like my own experience shared earlier, 2023 was a truly 'difficult time' for me, filled with unexpected 'stress' and 'anxiety' as I faced major 'personal decisions' about my living situation. It’s a period many young adults can relate to – that moment when you realize you need to start 'keeping it real' with yourself about what you truly need versus what others expect. For me, a big part of that reflection involved acknowledging a 'lack of support' from family in certain areas, which was tough to admit. But that's where the beauty of self-reflection comes in: it's about honest introspection, even when it's uncomfortable. It’s about diving into those feelings of uncertainty and understanding their roots. So, how do we make self-reflection a practical tool for 'personal growth' during these formative years? Firstly, creating dedicated space for it is crucial. This doesn't mean hours of silent meditation (unless that's your thing!). It could be journaling for 15 minutes a day, taking a quiet walk, or even just setting aside time over a cup of coffee to consciously process your thoughts and feelings. I found that writing down my anxieties helped me untangle them. Secondly, ask yourself tough questions. What truly makes me happy? What values am I living by? Am I making decisions for myself, or to please others? This was huge for me when I learned to 'trust my own judgment' instead of absorbing endless opinions. It’s about building that internal compass. Another vital aspect for young adults is recognizing the common themes that often emerge during this period. We're often reflecting on career paths, figuring out romantic relationships, establishing financial independence, and redefining our relationship with our families. These are all intense areas, and without reflection, it’s easy to feel swept away. Don't underestimate the power of your support system either. The 'friends' support' I received during my challenging times was invaluable. Sometimes, talking things through with a trusted friend can provide a fresh perspective or simply validate your feelings, which is a form of shared reflection. They helped me process everything and reminded me that I wasn't alone. Ultimately, self-reflection isn't about dwelling on the past, but about learning from it to shape a better future. It’s how we cultivate resilience, improve our decision-making, and boost our emotional intelligence. By regularly engaging in this practice, especially during challenging phases, we can turn those difficult times into powerful catalysts for growth, truly helping us flourish and navigate adulting with more clarity and peace. It's a continuous journey, but one that's incredibly rewarding for your well-being and development.

I resonate with this so much. Some times it takes just as much courage to let go as it does to start something new. We are all running the race of life but it doesn’t matter when we all finish as long as we do. Rooting for you :)
