I tried Pickleball for the first time! 🎾🏓
(Pretend like the emojis work for Pickleball lol)
I’d never played Pickleball but I kept hearing so much about it. It’s become so popular to the point where people were talking over tennis courts to play pickleball, and for the reality tv girlies they even had a pickleball group date on The Golden Bachelor last year. With some friends in town for CWS we decided to venture over to the Smashpark to play Pickleball! The rules were surprisingly simple and it it’s definitely a fun game. The only part that was a little bit tricky at first was keeping track of the score 🥴 but I ended up getting the hang of it! I would definitely play pickleball again in the future.

Okay, so like Katrina, I totally get the hype around Pickleball! It seems like everyone is playing it, and after finally trying it myself, I can absolutely see why. If you’re like me and have been curious but a little intimidated, trust me, it’s not as scary as it looks. Here's what I wish I knew before my first time stepping onto the court! First things first, what to wear and bring: You really just need comfortable athletic clothes and, most importantly, good athletic shoes. You'll be moving more than you think, and good sneakers are key for quick stops and starts – essential for good pickleball footwork! Don't worry too much about a paddle; many places, like Smashpark, offer rentals. Just bring a water bottle, because even though it looks chill, you'll work up a sweat! The rules really are surprisingly simple. The main things to remember are: The Serve: It's an underhand serve, hit diagonally. Easy peasy! The Double Bounce Rule: This is probably the trickiest one for beginners. The ball has to bounce once on your side after the serve, and then once on the opponent's side after their return, before anyone can volley (hit the ball before it bounces). After those two bounces, you can hit it in the air or after a bounce. The "Kitchen" (Non-Volley Zone): This is the area closest to the net. You can't hit the ball out of the air while standing in the kitchen. You can only go into the kitchen to hit a ball that has bounced there. This rule is what makes the game so strategic and fun, preventing powerful slams right at the net. Remembering the score can indeed be a headache at first, just like Katrina mentioned! The key is that only the serving team can score points. You usually play to 11, winning by at least two points. There’s a specific way to call out the score (Server’s score - Receiver’s score - Server number, e.g., "0-0-1" for the first server), but honestly, for your first few games, just focusing on hitting the ball and having fun is more important! Now, for that all-important pickleball footwork. While you don't need to be an Olympic sprinter, staying light on your feet and ready to move is a game-changer. Think of it like a light shuffle, always ready to react. Practicing a ready stance – knees slightly bent, paddle in front – will help you get to those shots quicker. Don't just stand flat-footed! Communication with your partner is also super helpful, especially for deciding who takes what shot. What makes pickleball so great for a first time pickleball experience is how social it is. You'll often see groups of smiling women and men of all ages enjoying themselves, just like in the picture. It's a fantastic way to get some exercise without feeling like a chore, and you're almost guaranteed a fun first-time sports experience with friends. My advice? Don't overthink it, just grab some friends, find a court, and give it a try. You might just find your new favorite hobby!

Pickleball is really big out here in California. I’ve been been waiting to try. Did you like it? I gotta learn the rules. We have a pickleball courts next to our house.
