Think about it...
When was the last time someone offered to take your picture with the kids? I mean, I really offered, not after you hinted or asked or practically begged. We mothers become ghosts in our own family stories, existing only behind the lens, curating memories we're rarely part of.
I realized today while scrolling through my camera roll that I have hundreds of beautiful moments captured, my kids with their dad, with grandparents, with friends, at the park, at school events, at home. But where am I? Hiding behind this phone, always on the wrong side of the camera, documenting everyone else's connection to my children while my own presence fades into whatever awkward selfie I manage to sneak in between everything else.
This mirror selfie in bad bathroom lighting with a messy braid is what I have to show for myself this week. No professional family photos where someone posed us just right, no candid shots of me reading to them or playing or laughing together. Just me, trying to remember what I look like in this season of motherhood while my children grow and change in thousands of perfectly captured moments.
Our children will grow up with photo evidence of everyone who loved them except, ironically, the one who was always there. The one who documented it all. Will they wonder years from now why there are so few pictures of me with them? Will they remember I was there when the photos don't show it?
So this is my gentle reminder to partners, to friends, to family, please, take our picture. Don't wait for us to ask. Don't let us become the missing piece in our family's visual history. One day, these babies won't be babies anymore, and all we'll have are the memories we managed to capture. And I want them to know without a doubt that I wasn't just behind the camera, I was right there in the middle of it all, loving them fiercely through every moment, messy hair and all.

As mothers, often our lives revolve around capturing memories for our families while we remain unseen in those very moments. It's not just about having pictures; it's about being present in our children’s lives and ensuring they remember us as part of their journey. This article reflects on the importance of including mothers in family photos, emphasizing how we deserve to be in the frame too. Think about it: what do your kids see when they look back at these photos? They should see the love, the laughter, and the connection, which includes not just the highlights of their lives but also the ordinary moments we share with them. In an era dominated by social media and the constant urge to document everything, let's not forget the significance of capturing our own moments of joy and connection. Family photos can represent not only special occasions but everyday interactions, stories, and laughter shared at home. By ensuring we are present in these photographs, we provide our children a complete narrative of their family life. So, let’s encourage our loved ones to pick up the camera and capture us living, laughing, and loving, rather than just being the behind-the-scenes person. The memories we create together are what truly enrich our family history, helping future generations remember the love that surrounded them.
