New big project!

The first stitches 🪡

So, I’ve started my new big project, this is the second commissioned art, the series Western Loudoun Farm.

To sum up, I'm working on three pictures at the same time ^^

... Read moreIt's always an exhilarating feeling to start a new, significant art project, especially when it's a commissioned piece. There's a unique blend of excitement and responsibility that comes with transforming someone else's vision into a tangible work of art, all through the delicate dance of needle and thread. This particular series, focusing on a 'Western Loudoun Farm,' has been a journey through inspiration and meticulous planning even before the first stitch was laid. When I embark on a commissioned series like this, especially one with a strong landscape or nature theme, my process usually begins with deep dives into reference materials. For the 'Western Loudoun Farm' pieces, this meant immersing myself in images of rolling hills, rustic barns, and the vibrant greenery that defines the region. Capturing the essence of a place through embroidery isn't just about replicating what you see; it's about conveying the feeling, the light, and the unique textures. I find myself thinking about the changing seasons, the play of light on fences, and the subtle variations in the natural landscape. One of the biggest challenges, and perhaps the most rewarding, is juggling multiple projects simultaneously. Currently, I'm working on three distinct pictures for this series. This requires a careful balance of focus and flexibility. I often dedicate specific blocks of time to each piece, allowing me to fully immerse myself in its unique demands before switching gears. It also helps to keep the creative flow going – if I hit a mental block on one, I can move to another and return with fresh eyes. This approach isn't for everyone, but I've found it keeps my artistic energy high and prevents burnout. For anyone considering commissioning an embroidery piece, or even starting their own, understanding the journey is key. It begins with a concept, often a conversation with the client to truly grasp their vision. Then comes the design phase, translating those ideas into a visual sketch that guides the stitching. Choosing the right threads – their colors, textures, and sheen – is crucial; they are my palette. Each stitch is a deliberate choice, building layers of color and form. The satisfaction of seeing a blank canvas slowly transform into a detailed, textured landscape is immense. Embroidery, to me, is more than just a craft; it's a meditative practice and a powerful storytelling medium. The tactile nature of the threads, the rhythmic movement of the needle, and the slow unfolding of an image create a deep connection to the art. For those inspired to pick up a needle, I'd suggest starting with a simple kit or pattern to get a feel for the basic stitches. Don't be afraid to experiment with different thread types and fabrics. The beauty of this art form lies in its versatility and the endless possibilities for personal expression. Every project, big or small, is a chance to learn and grow as an artist, creating something truly unique and meaningful.
