Trimming an overgrown bonsai tree

For tropical species like my Ficus bonsai, you have a bit more flexibility and can often prune year-round, especially if grown indoors. Always observe your tree; it will tell you when it's ready. Before you start, make sure you have the right tools. Sharp, clean concave cutters are a game-changer for larger branches, as they make a cut that heals flush with the trunk, leaving minimal scarring. You’ll also need good quality trimming shears for smaller twigs and leaves. Don't forget some cut paste for larger wounds – it helps prevent disease and promotes faster healing. Now for the 'how-to.' When approaching an overgrown bonsai, I usually start by removing any dead, diseased, or crossing branches. This instantly cleans up the tree. Next, I think about the overall desired shape. Are you going for an informal upright, a cascade, or something else? Visualize the finished product. Then, begin by reducing the length of the longest branches, aiming to create a more compact canopy. Remember the 'two leaves' rule for many species: prune back to two sets of leaves on a branch to encourage denser foliage. For those of you with a Chinese Elm bonsai, similar principles apply. They are robust and respond very well to pruning, often back-budding vigorously. Don't be afraid to be decisive! The key is to remove branches that are growing too thick, growing downwards, or competing with primary branches. When you prune, always cut just above a bud or a branch junction that is pointing in the direction you want new growth to go. This attention to detail really makes a difference in achieving that desired aesthetic 'transformation'. After pruning, make sure your bonsai gets adequate light and water.
