My recent trip to Burgess Falls in its full winter glory was absolutely unforgettable, and I just had to share more insights for anyone considering this magical Tennessee adventure! While my initial post touched on the beauty, there's so much more to know to make your visit safe and truly spectacular, especially if you're planning to kayak. First off, seeing Burgess Falls in its 'winter coat' is a sight unlike any other. The powerful cascades transform into a breathtaking display, with massive icicles clinging to the cliff face and extensive ice formations everywhere. We even spotted smaller, tiered waterfalls completely frozen over, turning them into incredible ice sculptures. For photographers, this is prime time! That long exposure shot of the flowing water against snow-covered rocks is pure magic. I’d recommend bringing a tripod for those dreamy, ethereal captures. Kayaking the still waters in winter adds an entirely different dimension. Imagine paddling your pink kayak (or any color!) through a serene, icy environment, surrounded by cliffs adorned with impressive icicles. It’s incredibly peaceful, but safety is paramount. The water, even if calm, is freezing. Make sure you’re wearing appropriate layers – think dry suits or wetsuits if you have them, and definitely waterproof outer layers. Keep an eye out for floating ice chunks, especially closer to the falls. We saw unique ice formations resting on the sandy riverbank, which were beautiful but a reminder of the cold. For the hike down to the base, be prepared for slippery conditions. We encountered several spots where rocks were covered in ice, and even some exposed tree roots had a thin, treacherous glaze. Good waterproof hiking boots with excellent traction are non-negotiable. The effort to navigate these conditions is absolutely worth it when you stand at the base, looking up at the majestic, partially frozen falls. Beyond the main falls, explore the area around. The entire landscape becomes a 'winter wonderland' with snow-dusted rocks and bare trees contrasting with the vibrant greens that sometimes peak through the ice. It’s a photographer's dream, offering countless opportunities for unique shots. Just remember to pack extra batteries for your camera – cold weather drains them fast! And don't forget a thermos with a hot drink to warm you up after your adventure.
