Foster & Horsehair Falls

My recent trip to Foster Falls and its bonus sister, Horsehair Falls, during a cold snap was absolutely unforgettable! Seeing these Tennessee beauties in their full winter glory, draped in what I called their 'winter wonderland coats,' was a truly magical experience. If you’re like me and love chasing waterfalls, especially when they’re frozen solid, you absolutely have to add this to your list. Visiting Foster Falls in winter is a game-changer. The entire landscape transforms. The powerful Foster Falls cascades into a deep blue pool, but what really gets you is the thick ice and icicles covering the surrounding rock faces. It creates this stunning, almost otherworldly scene. I noticed intricate patterns of ice on the water's surface leading up to the falls, and large, rounded snow and ice formations where the water crashes down. It’s definitely a sight that makes you appreciate the raw beauty of nature in its coldest form. For a winter hike, make sure you're geared up with waterproof boots and layers; conditions can be slippery, but the reward is so worth it. Just a short distance away, Horsehair Falls offers its own unique frozen spectacle. While Foster Falls is grand, Horsehair is more delicate, yet equally captivating when frozen. I saw it largely frozen, with intricate ice formations adorning the rock face. A narrow stream of water sometimes still flows down the center, creating a beautiful contrast against the frozen backdrop. There was even a large mound of snow and ice in the foreground, making for some incredible photo opportunities. It truly is the perfect complement to Foster Falls, and finding it feels like discovering a hidden gem. The trail to Foster Falls, part of the South Cumberland State Park near Chattanooga, is an adventure in itself. It’s a moderate hike, winding through a beautiful forest that feels serene even in winter with its bare trees. You'll cross a scenic suspension bridge that spans the river, offering some amazing views before you even reach the falls. The forest floor can be rocky and muddy, so good traction is key, especially with potential ice. While many people associate hiking with warmer months, experiencing this forest in winter, with its quiet calm and the promise of frozen waterfalls, is a truly special encounter. It's a wonderful way to connect with nature and appreciate Tennessee's diverse landscapes beyond just the Great Smoky Mountains. I really wish these falls were a bit closer to me so I could hike them more often. But every visit leaves me feeling refreshed and inspired.
