While squatting is often suggested as a great way to open the pelvis and facilitate pushing, it's important to recognize that no one can realistically hold a full squat for hours without fatigue. As shared by experienced doulas, labor usually lasts several hours for first-time parents, and maintaining a strenuous position like deep squatting throughout can be exhausting. Instead, mixing various upright positions is highly beneficial. For example, alternating between gentle squats, sitting, standing, leaning forward onto a surface, or even side-lying can help manage energy levels and reduce discomfort. 'Restful positions' that allow for breaks and relaxation are equally important and highly recommended during the pushing stage. These positions can help conserve strength when contractions are intense. From personal experience, leaning forward while supported by a partner or a birth ball, or performing a modified squat with assistance, worked well to ease pressure without overexertion. Breathing deeply and rhythmically during pushing also enhances effectiveness, a tip widely endorsed by birth professionals. The notion that one must remain in a fixed squatting position throughout pushing is a misconception. Labor is dynamic, and comfort and efficiency come from adjusting positions according to how the birthing person feels at any moment. Embracing this flexible, individualized approach promotes a more positive labor experience and supports the natural progress of childbirth.
