From Shy to Speaking in College

I used to dread participation in class. In my sophomore year, I had a communications class where 20% of our grade was based on speaking in discussions. I remember sitting in the back, heart racing every time the professor looked around the room.

I always had thoughts, but I stayed quiet — scared of sounding dumb, messing up, or just being judged. I’d rehearse what I wanted to say in my head, and by the time I built up the courage, someone else would already say it.

So I made a deal with myself: speak once a week, no matter how small. The first time, my voice literally shook. But the world didn’t end. No one laughed. And after class, a girl came up to me and said, “I was thinking the same thing.”

That moment changed everything for me.

Now, I still get nervous sometimes — especially in big lecture halls — but I don’t let that stop me from sharing anymore. You don’t have to be the loudest voice in the room. You just have to trust that your voice matters too 🤍

... Read moreFear of speaking in class is a common challenge many college students face, especially when participation affects grades significantly, as highlighted in the article. The approach of setting manageable goals, such as speaking once a week or asking a question, helps build confidence gradually without overwhelming pressure. Preparing what to say beforehand is another effective strategy that reduces anxiety and improves clarity during discussions. It's important to remember that stumbling over words is normal, and most peers rarely notice small mistakes. This mindset shift from perfectionism to participation allows students to focus more on sharing ideas rather than being flawless speakers. Repeated exposure to speaking opportunities diminishes fear over time, making public speaking feel less intimidating. Even experienced speakers can experience nervousness, particularly in large lecture halls, but continuing to engage actively despite this nervousness prevents silence from taking over. In addition, supportive classroom environments where students encourage each other can significantly impact confidence. Positive feedback or simply knowing that others share similar thoughts validates one's contributions and reduces feelings of isolation. For those struggling with communication anxiety, university resources such as public speaking workshops, counseling services, or student organizations dedicated to communication skills can offer further assistance. Ultimately, trusting that your voice matters, no matter how soft or small, can empower you to express yourself fully and enhance your overall college experience.
