Hellsing Abridge is one of my all time favorites
So, you're standing at the crossroads of the Hellsing universe, wondering: 'Should I watch Hellsing or Hellsing Ultimate first?' Believe me, you're not alone! It's a common question, and as someone who's delved deep into all versions, I can definitely share my two cents. Let's break down the main contenders. First, there's the original Hellsing TV series from 2001. This was my initial introduction, and while it has a certain charm and a darker, gothic atmosphere, it actually deviates quite a bit from the original manga story halfway through. The animation can feel a little dated now, but it's still a piece of anime history. Then we have *Hellsing Ultimate*, the OVA (Original Video Animation) series. This is often considered the definitive adaptation, and for good reason! It follows the manga almost perfectly, boasts incredible animation (especially for its time), and absolutely nails the over-the-top action and character portrayals. If you want the full, unadulterated, bloody epic of Alucard and the Hellsing Organization, Ultimate is your go-to. And finally, my personal favorite, Hellsing Abridged by Team Four Star! Now, this isn't a direct adaptation but a fan-made parody. Think of it as a comedic re-telling that takes all the iconic moments and sprinkles them with brilliant, often meta, humor. This is where you get those unforgettable, laugh-out-loud lines and scenarios. For instance, who could forget that hilarious exchange between Alucard and Mr. Bernadotte, discussing 'push-up bras or stilettos' and Alucard's deadpan 'Wait! You wear a push-up bra? I don't wear a bra. Oh my god'? It perfectly captures the irreverent spirit that makes Abridged so special. So, which one should you watch first? Here’s my personal recommendation, based on countless re-watches: 1. Start with Hellsing Ultimate. Seriously, dive into this one first. It gives you the complete, canonical story, the epic scope, and the character development as the creator intended. You'll appreciate the gravitas and the sheer spectacle of it all. It sets the stage for everything else. 2. Then, watch Hellsing Abridged. Once you have the full Hellsing Ultimate experience under your belt, jumping into Abridged is an absolute blast. The jokes land perfectly because you understand the original context, and seeing them twist dramatic scenes into comedic gold is just pure genius. It’s a fantastic way to revisit the story with a fresh, hilarious perspective. 3. The original Hellsing TV series? Honestly, you can watch this one last, or even skip it if you're pressed for time. While I enjoyed it for nostalgia, its divergence from the manga means it offers a different, non-canonical narrative. It's more of a curiosity for completists. In my opinion, Hellsing Abridged truly shines when you know the source material from *Ultimate*. It’s like getting all the inside jokes. The way they poke fun at everything, from character quirks to anime tropes, is just phenomenal. It’s why it’s consistently one of my all-time favorites, making me laugh out loud with every re-watch. Don't miss out on the full Hellsing journey – enjoy the ride!
