Thrift store find! Vintage Dog Guide

Anyone else one of those little kids carrying around a dog encyclopedia 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️

Just me & my tism? Okay, fair.

I found this a couple of weeks ago & it was very cool to see a balanced, mostly positive reinforcement based book from the 70s! Everything in it is what I would call “Commonsense” dog training. Sadly, not as many people (or trainers) have the commonsense these days.

This book was from an era when dogs were dogs, owners & breeders were hobbyists, and owning and training a dog the basics was a given. I loved reading it, just to see how some things have changed & some haven’t.

With headings like “mongrel vs pedigree” and suggesting getting a puppy from a neighbor over a shelter (which weren’t very common back then) so it’s not even mentioned…it’s definitely not something that would do good published today in the dog world. But honestly, most of the things that are “unpublishable” points plays more to the owners & societies sensibilities than to the care or well being of the actual dog. The care guide for dogs in this book is spot on. What does that say about our mindset as owners??

... Read moreIn recent years, vintage dog training guides have gained popularity, as many dog owners seek to combine traditional methods with modern knowledge. This particular guide emphasizes a balanced approach that was prevalent in the 1970s, focusing on positive reinforcement, common sense, and strong owner-dog relationships. Historical dog training methods included elements that may seem outdated today, such as the preference for obtaining puppies from local breeders instead of shelters. However, it's essential to acknowledge the evolution of societal views on dog training, where adopting from shelters has become increasingly promoted due to the importance of animal welfare. Contemporary dog trainers emphasize the significance of understanding canine behavior. They advocate for positive reinforcement over punishment, which aligns with the caring principles highlighted in the vintage guide. However, current training methodologies are also informed by research in canine psychology, making them more nuanced than what was once considered standard. For example, socialization as a crucial part of training is now well understood and addressed differently than in the past. Modern training techniques also integrate a wide variety of tools and approaches tailored to each dog's unique personality, promoting a safer and more effective learning environment. Additionally, the awareness of various dog breeds and their specific needs has risen, leading to more specialized training techniques that cater to different temperaments, sizes, and energy levels. This shift highlights the importance of individualized training plans as opposed to a one-size-fits-all approach prevalent in earlier methods. Through the lens of history, it can be fascinating to observe how our understanding of dogs has transformed and how the timeless bond between humans and dogs continues to flourish, merging past wisdom with contemporary practices for a better future in dog training.
