Diary of an MS4: scrub tech edition

Shout out to all the NICE scrub techs and OR nurses!!! Med students love you! We are stressed or unsure of ourselves so a little will go a long way. Please help us learn, not get mad when we mess up. We’re new and make mistakes. That being said…

I LOOOooooooVvvvEeeeed my scrub tech today! She was the nicest, most down to earth scrub tech I’ve ever been with (mind you she has 24 yrs on the job so she knows what she’s doing). I know surgery can be tough and stressful but small talk while setting up or a welcoming smile and “how are you” go a long way.

Scrub techs and OR nurses play a crucial role not only in ensuring smooth surgical procedures but also in supporting medical students through their learning curve. Their willingness to offer small acts of kindness, such as friendly greetings and patient explanations, fosters a positive environment that helps reduce stress and build confidence. Scrub techs are highly skilled professionals who prepare the instruments and maintain the sterile field, a demanding task that requires precision and experience. As noted, some scrub techs have decades of experience, making them invaluable sources of practical knowledge for medical students. Their mentorship, even in casual interactions, can significantly enhance a student's understanding of surgical protocols and techniques. Medical students often face anxiety when stepping into the OR, worried about making mistakes. A supportive scrub tech or nurse can make a huge difference by providing gentle guidance rather than frustration. This compassionate approach accelerates learning and encourages students to ask questions and engage more deeply. Furthermore, the dynamics in the OR demonstrate the importance of teamwork and communication. Effective collaboration among surgeons, nurses, techs, and students directly impacts patient outcomes. Recognizing and appreciating each team member's contributions promotes a respectful and efficient work atmosphere. For medical students embarking on surgical rotations, building good relationships with scrub techs and OR nurses can lead to a richer educational experience. Showing gratitude, maintaining professionalism, and fostering open communication are simple yet powerful ways to strengthen these connections. In summary, the diary highlights a vital perspective: behind every successful surgery is a team that includes dedicated scrub techs and nurses who support learners and contribute to the overall care. Their kindness and expertise not only improve surgical workflow but also create a nurturing space for medical students to grow and thrive.
