Participating in speech and debate has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life, especially because it allowed me to share my personal story about living with Crohn's disease. When I first started, I was nervous about speaking in front of an audience, but preparing my original oratory gave me a powerful outlet to express myself and educate others. Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel condition that affects the digestive tract, and many people don’t know much about it. Being able to explain what it is and how it impacts daily life was not only cathartic for me but also eye-opening for my listeners. It felt amazing to dispel misconceptions and provide real insight into a condition that’s often invisible but significantly impactful. Beyond the awareness aspect, I fell in love with the community within speech and debate. Whether you enjoy crafting strong arguments in debate rounds or embracing performance and humor in speech events, there’s something for everyone. The tournaments are exciting and bring together people with diverse interests, and the friendships formed often last beyond the competitions. If you're considering joining, know that it's a rewarding way to build confidence, improve communication skills, and find a supportive group of peers. From laughter in humorous interpretations to serious discussions in debate, the variety keeps it engaging. Plus, the skills you develop — public speaking, critical thinking, quick analysis — are valuable wherever life takes you. I’ll definitely miss competing, but the experiences, lessons, and friendships I've gained are lifelong treasures. For anyone on the fence, I highly recommend diving into speech and debate at your school. Whether you want to advocate for causes, perform, or simply challenge yourself, it’s a fun and enriching journey worth taking.
