Karate Was MMA Before MMA

Karate Was MMA Before MMA Existed | Kevin Dewayne Hughes, Expert Martial Artist

Modern mixed martial arts is often viewed as a relatively new phenomenon that combines distinct sporting disciplines like kickboxing and wrestling. However, a historical analysis reveals that classical karate was a comprehensive combat system long before the rise of modern cage fighting. Original karate practitioners did not separate their training into isolated sports. Instead, they practiced a complete method of self defense that integrated powerful striking with sophisticated grappling and joint locking techniques. This holistic approach ensured that a martial artist was prepared for any range of combat. Classical karate curricula also included the use of weapons, showing that the art was designed for survival rather than just athleticism. By studying the ancient forms, or kata, one can find hidden maneuvers that involve throws, takedowns, and chokes. (A maxim from Shobayashi Shorin-ryu: Every turn in a kata is a throw]. These elements demonstrate that Karate was so mixed that it was a complete martial art. Unlike other complete martial arts, Karate become mixed because it constantly borrowed from the fighting traditions of others. The transition from a battlefield art to a combat sport led to the removal of many grappling techniques to make the practice safer for competition. Further, the modern character development karate was made ineffective on purpose for teaching young children for physical fitness. When we look back at the roots of the system, it becomes clear that the pioneers of the art were already practicing a form of mixed martial arts centuries ago.

Philosophy Corner: The philosophy of karate as a mixed martial art centers on the concept of totality and functional efficiency. It suggests that a true warrior should not be limited by the artificial boundaries of a specific sporting style. Instead, the practitioner seeks to understand the universal principles of motion and leverage that apply to all forms of physical conflict.

Awesomeness Corner: What makes this topic truly impressive is the realization that ancient masters had already solved the complex puzzles of combat integration without the benefit of modern film or global communication. The ingenuity required to weave together striking, ground fighting, and tactical awareness into a single cohesive system is the result of the classical martial arts born of warfare.

Psychology Corner: The psychology of this integrated approach fosters a mindset of adaptability and resilience. By training in a system that covers every possible scenario, the practitioner develops a sense of calm confidence known as zanshin. This mental state reduces the fear of the unknown because the individual knows they have the tools to handle a variety of pressures and unpredictable environments.

Warrior Ethos: For the warrior, the significance of karate as an original mixed martial art lies in the pursuit of absolute readiness. A warrior cannot choose the terms of an engagement, so their training must be as diverse as the threats they might face. Embracing the full spectrum of the art ensures that the martial artist maintains the tactical advantage in any encounter.

Spiritual Ethos: From a Christian perspective, the discipline of a complete martial art can be seen as stewardship of the body and mind. It reflects the biblical call to be sober and vigilant, recognizing that strength is a gift to be used for protection and the upholding of justice. Mastering oneself through a difficult and diverse discipline mirrors the spiritual journey of seeking balance and strength in all areas of life.

Ponder this: How would modern martial arts competitions change if all classical grappling and weapon techniques were reintroduced into the arena?

4/20 Edited to

... Read moreAs someone who has practiced various forms of martial arts over the years, I've come to appreciate how karate's classical roots embody many elements found in modern MMA. Unlike the compartmentalized approach of training isolated striking or grappling disciplines, classical karate training embraces a truly holistic combat system. This means practitioners learn not only striking but also throws, joint locks, and even weaponry, reflecting a pragmatic focus on real-world survival rather than mere sport. One aspect I find fascinating is how kata—the traditional forms practiced in karate—encode a wealth of concealed techniques. For example, many turns and movements in Shobayashi Shorin-ryu kata correspond to throws or takedowns, which are often overlooked by casual observers. This shows that kata function both as solo practice drills and as repositories of combative knowledge, pre-dating the idea of “mixed” martial arts by centuries. Moreover, the evolution of karate from battlefield art to a sport led to the simplification and removal of many grappling and potentially dangerous techniques, making contemporary karate more accessible but less comprehensive for self-defense. In my experience, revitalizing these traditional elements adds a valuable dimension to martial arts training, enhancing adaptability across striking and close-quarters grappling. From a psychological perspective, training in a diverse system like classical karate cultivates zanshin, or sustained alertness, and instills confidence in one’s ability to handle unpredictable situations. This mental readiness is just as critical as physical technique, fostering resilience and mental calm under pressure. In practical terms, I often reflect on how modern MMA competitions might differ if they reincorporated the full range of classical karate grappling and weapons techniques. Could this holistic approach redefine fighters' strategies and conditioning? From firsthand experience, embracing the classical martial arts mindset broadens one’s perspective on combat, encourages cross-disciplinary learning, and ultimately fosters a more adaptable and effective warrior.
