... Read moreOkay, wow! My iPad just got a major glow-up with iPadOS 26, and I couldn't wait to dive in. For anyone wondering what to do on 'day one' after updating, I'm here to share my initial exploration and a few step-by-step tips for getting started with some of the coolest new features.
First things first, after the update, I immediately went looking for the much-anticipated Journal app. It's super easy to find – just swipe down on your home screen or look in your App Library. Opening it up, I felt like I had a brand-new space for my thoughts. To create your first entry, simply tap the '+' icon. You can add text, photos, and even voice memos. I'm excited to try out the new 'reed pen' functionality if it's integrated, making my journaling feel even more natural. It's a fantastic way to capture moments and reflections right from your iPad, and I'm already planning to make it part of my daily routine!
Next, I had to try out the new smart window management, which really brings 'windows on windows' to life. This is a game-changer for multitasking! On day one, I experimented with opening two apps side-by-side. To do this, open your first app, then drag a second app from the Dock onto the screen. What's amazing is how easily you can now resize these windows by dragging the corners, and literally 'moveable' them anywhere – even partially off-screen – to truly 'expand your workspace'. It's so fluid and makes switching between tasks like research and note-taking incredibly efficient. The new Menu bar, similar to a Mac, also makes closing, minimizing, or expanding these windows super intuitive. This feels like a huge step towards making the iPad even more 'pro'.
Another feature I quickly fell in love with is the updated Files app customization. I'm all about organization, and being able to 'customize my folders' with a personal touch is fantastic. On day one, I went into my Projects folder, tapped the three dots for more options, and found the new 'Add Icons' or 'Emojis' feature. I added a little rocket emoji to my 'Launch Ideas' folder and a green circle for 'Completed'. You can also assign 'tags affect color' to visually categorize files, which is a neat trick for quick identification. It’s a small change, but it makes navigating my files so much more enjoyable and efficient.
Finally, I briefly checked out the new Preview app. It's perfect for quickly peeking at documents, marking up PDFs, or doing quick edits with Apple Pencil support. And while I haven't fully delved into it yet, the mention of 'Intelligent Actions' and 'Apple Intelligence' in the OCR results has me intrigued. I’ll definitely be exploring how these learning models might integrate with shortcuts and enhance my workflow in apps like Notes or Mail in the coming days. It sounds like iPadOS 26 is truly going to make the iPad even smarter!
Overall, my 'day one' with iPadOS 26 has been incredibly positive. These new features already feel intuitive and significantly boost productivity and creativity. I encourage everyone to update and start exploring – there's so much to discover!
