I love taking vital signs

As a CNA vital signs are a crucial part of your job. I have a love/hate relationship with taking them though. My first rounds 7pm-8pm consist of taking 8 patients vitals whereas on Sundays I have to take all 13 vitals🤦🏾‍♀️. I bring my own blood pressure wrist cuff, thermometer and O2 finger stat☺️ #trendingvideos #cna #nightroutine #cnajourney

... Read moreTaking vital signs is an essential part of healthcare, especially for CNAs who provide frontline care to patients. Vital signs such as temperature, respiration rate, pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation give critical information about a patient’s current health status. From the experience shared, it’s clear that taking vital signs can be both rewarding and demanding. Handling 8 to 13 patients in one shift, especially during night rounds, requires efficiency, attention to detail, and endurance. Bringing personal equipment like a blood pressure wrist cuff, a thermometer, and an O2 finger pulse oximeter can help streamline the process and ensure consistent, reliable readings. Interpreting vital signs correctly is crucial. For example, the OCR content shows a temperature reading of 97°F, respiration rate of 89 breaths per minute, and a pulse oximetry value of 97%. These numbers need to be assessed in context; a respiration rate of 89 could be a data recognition error or indicate respiratory distress, which warrants immediate attention. Nurses and CNAs must be trained to recognize normal versus abnormal values and escalate care as needed. Managing vital signs during night shifts is often challenging due to patient rest periods, staffing constraints, and fluctuating patient conditions. Using a structured routine and timely documentation helps maintain accuracy and effective communication with the wider healthcare team. Even though it can be exhausting, many CNAs find meaningful satisfaction in monitoring patients’ wellbeing through vital signs—it’s a direct way to make a difference. For those new to CNA work or anyone interested in nursing care, building skill and confidence in taking vital signs can greatly improve job performance and patient safety. Moreover, sharing these personal experiences helps foster community support among CNAs, who often face similar challenges and successes in their daily work.
