Kitchen Remodel Before & After!
This kitchen remodel client wanted to pack as much functionality as she could into the space but she also wanted it to feel modernized and incorporate open shelving….So more functional but less cabinets…🤯 Challenge accepted! 🙋🏻♀️
We were super strategic with how each cabinet would function and what they would hold. I wish I had footage to show you the various insets and pullouts and how each cabinet works but you’ll just have to take my word for it! 😜
On the open walls we mounted a plate rack on the left and pot rail behind the range so that those areas served an important function. We did a tower on the left side with doors that slide into the sides of the unit to house small kitchen appliances on the countertop with fruit and veggie bins below. On the right side we did another tower with a wine glass rack mounted inside and some pull outs for pantry items she uses frequently….next to that is a door leading to a hidden laundry room where we did a ton of open shelving for additional pantry items and appliances she doesn’t use as often. 🙌🏼

Transforming a small kitchen can feel like a huge challenge, but it's also an incredible opportunity to get creative and truly maximize every single inch! When planning a small kitchen remodel, the goal is always to enhance both storage and functionality, making the most of limited square footage. I’ve learned that with thoughtful design, even the tiniest kitchen can become a beautiful and highly efficient hub. One of the biggest struggles with a small kitchen is often the perceived lack of storage. My approach always involves thinking vertically and strategically. Consider floor-to-ceiling cabinetry where possible, or add open shelving above windows or doors. I've found that adding a plate rack on an open wall, like we did in a recent project, not only frees up cabinet space but also adds a charming, functional display element. It’s all about making sure 'every cabinet had a purpose,' as I often tell my clients. This means incorporating pull-out pantries, deep drawer organizers, and even clever insets for things like spice racks or cutting boards. Don't underestimate the power of custom inserts to create a designated spot for everything, from pots and pans to small appliances, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Another game-changer for small spaces is integrating multi-functional zones. If space allows, creating a dedicated 'breakfast station' can be a dream come true. Imagine a neat spot with your coffee maker, toaster, and easily accessible mugs, all cleverly tucked away behind slide-in doors when not in use. This keeps countertops clutter-free and makes mornings a breeze. Similarly, a well-placed pot rail behind the range can add a touch of personality and practical storage for frequently used items, keeping them within reach without taking up precious drawer space. Sometimes, the best storage is hidden storage! I once designed a kitchen where a 'hidden door' led to a laundry room that also housed additional shelving for infrequently used appliances and extra pantry storage. It was truly a 'unique and stunning' solution that delighted the homeowners and kept the main kitchen sleek and uncluttered. Think about how you can repurpose adjacent spaces or create clever nooks to stash items that don't need to be on display. Beyond pure function, making a small kitchen feel larger and more inviting is key. Lighter color palettes, reflective surfaces like subway tile backsplashes, and ample lighting (under-cabinet, recessed, and decorative pendants) can work wonders. Open shelving, if kept tidy, also helps a space feel less heavy and more airy. Seeing the 'before and after' is always the most rewarding part. The 'before' often involves wasted space, cluttered counters, and inefficient workflows. The 'after' is about creating a kitchen that not only looks beautiful but truly supports your daily life, making cooking and entertaining a joy. Don't be afraid to challenge conventional layouts and get creative with your design; every small kitchen has the potential for a big transformation!
