ใครกำลังลังเลว่าจะเริ่มอ่าน The Caller (Chris Carter) ดีไหม หรืออยากรู้ว่าเล่มนี้ “โทน” ประมาณไหนก่อนซื้อ/ยืม บอกเลยว่าเป็นอีกเล่มของซีรีส์ Robert Hunter ที่หยิบคอนเซ็ปต์ง่ายๆ อย่าง “แค่รับสาย” มาขยี้ให้หลอนและกดดันแบบสุดๆ ประโยคบนปกที่ว่า “ขอบคุณที่รับสาย คุณได้สิทธิเป็นฆาตกรทันที” ไม่ได้มาเล่นๆ เพราะพอเรื่องเปิดมา เราจะรู้สึกเหมือนถูกลากไปนั่งอยู่ข้างคนปลายสายจริงๆ จุดที่ทำให้ The Caller น่ากลัวไม่ใช่แค่ความรุนแรง แต่คือความ “บังคับให้เลือก” ของสถานการณ์ ฆาตกรให้คนสนิทของเหยื่อตอบคำถาม 2 ข้อ ฟังดูเหมือนเกม แต่พออยู่ในบริบทที่ต้องมองคนที่รักถูกคุกคามผ่านวิดีโอคอล ความกดดันมันพุ่งมาก และมันทำให้เราอ่านไปก็เผลอตั้งคำถามกับตัวเองตลอดว่า “ถ้าเป็นเรา จะตอบได้ไหม จะพลาดไหม” ซึ่งนี่แหละที่ทำให้เล่มนี้ติดมือมาก ถ้าถามเรื่องการสืบสวน เล่มนี้ยังคงสไตล์เดิมของโรเบิร์ต ฮันเตอร์ คือเก็บรายละเอียดเล็กๆ แล้วโยงเป็นภาพใหญ่ได้แบบเหนือมนุษย์ (บางช่วงก็ตะลึงว่าแค่นี้คิดได้ไง) ใครชอบนิยายสืบสวนที่เดินเรื่องไว มีการไล่ล่า มีแรงกดดันจากเวลา และมีปมคนร้ายที่ไม่ได้ “ร้ายแบนๆ” น่าจะถูกใจ ส่วนคำค้นที่หลายคนหาอย่าง “the caller chris carter book cover” ถ้าดูจากปกไทยจะเป็นโทนดำเข้ม ตัวอักษรเด่น และมีคำโปรยประโยคเดียวที่ชวนขนลุกมาก เหมาะกับคนชอบสะสมปกหรืออยากได้เล่มที่วางบนชั้นแล้วดูเท่แบบสายดาร์ก ข้อควรรู้ก่อนอ่าน: มีฉากบรรยายสภาพศพและความรุนแรงค่อนข้างหนักจริง แนะนำคนที่ไม่ไหวกับรายละเอียดโหดๆ ให้เช็กอารมณ์ตัวเองก่อน หรืออ่านช่วงกลางวัน/มีอะไรเบาๆ คั่นจะช่วยได้ ทริคส่วนตัวเพื่ออ่านให้สนุกขึ้น: ถ้าไม่เคยอ่านซีรีส์มาก่อนก็เข้าได้ เพราะคดีเป็นตอนๆ แต่ถ้าเคยอ่านเล่มก่อนๆ จะยิ่งอินกับความ “ลุยเดี่ยว” ของฮันเตอร์และไดนามิกการทำงานมากขึ้น สรุปคือ ถ้าคุณอยากได้นิยายสืบสวนที่ทั้งลุ้น ทั้งหลอน และบีบหัวใจจากสถานการณ์วิดีโอคอลแบบหนีไม่พ้น The Caller by Chris Carter คือเล่มที่มีโอกาสอ่านเพลินจนเงยหน้าอีกทีหมดเล่มแบบไม่รู้ตัว
