Marriage Tips From A Widow

Hi, I’m Chiquita — a widow, mom of 4, and a woman learning how to rebuild through faith, healing, discipline, and purpose.

Becoming a widow forced me to reflect on marriage, love, communication, grace, and the ways I showed up in my relationship. Some lessons came through grief. Some came through maturity. And some came through realizing that love requires more than feelings — it requires self-awareness, patience, partnership, and the willingness to see beyond your own point of view.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that marriage was never about making one person responsible for the other’s happiness. It was about stewardship, grace, communication, and learning how to love each other with intention.

This page is a reflection of that rebuilding process. It’s for the woman healing after heartbreak, grief, disappointment, or life transitions… and learning how to become whole again through faith, structure, and growth.

If that’s you, I’d love for you to follow along. I’ll be sharing more of my journey, lessons on healing, faith, emotional growth, discipline, and becoming the woman God is calling me to be.

... Read moreNavigating marriage after experiencing profound loss is a journey that deeply reshapes one’s understanding of love and partnership. The insights shared here resonate with me personally, reminding me that marriage is not a place to assign blame or expect another person to carry the full burden of happiness. Instead, it’s a shared responsibility where grace and open communication create a foundation for growth. One key lesson I have found valuable is the power of communicating to express rather than to blame. When frustration or hurt arises, framing conversations around personal feelings and needs with respect rather than accusation fosters understanding. It requires self-awareness to recognize when emotions stem from internal struggles versus relational issues. Similarly, embracing grace means acknowledging that your partner, like you, faces challenges and emotions that may remain invisible but still affect the relationship. This willingness to make space for their experience without assuming full responsibility for it is vital. Love, then, is not just a feeling but an intentional act of patience, empathy, and persistent effort. For anyone rebuilding or seeking to strengthen their marriage, focusing on stewardship of your own happiness rather than expecting it to be delivered by your spouse can lead to a healthier dynamic. This doesn’t mean independence from love, but rather recognizing that a supportive marriage complements joy rather than substitutes for it. Ultimately, marriage taught me the importance of showing up intentionally, with discipline and faith, especially after hardship. These lessons encourage an ongoing process of emotional growth where both partners learn to love beyond their own viewpoints, creating a resilient bond rooted in mutual respect and purpose.
