My first DIY silk press was a fail 😭… but this time I finally learned what my hair actually needed.
The first time I tried to silk press my hair at home, I made the mistake of only using a clarifying shampoo. My hair was clean, yes… but it wasn’t moisturized enough, and I learned real quick that a silk press starts way before the flat iron.
So this time, I switched up my process and it made a huge difference:
What I changed this time
• I used Ouai Clarifying Shampoo first to remove buildup and product residue
• then followed with SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo to add moisture back in so my hair wouldn’t feel stripped
• I deep conditioned with SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Deep Conditioner and used my Defeny steamer to help the treatment penetrate better
• I used CHI Iron Guard to help protect my hair from heat damage
• then added CHI Silk Infusion for softness, shine, and a smoother finish
• during the drying process, I used the concentrator tool on my Dyson first to direct airflow and smooth the hair, then went in with the comb attachment to help stretch and straighten it more before flat ironing
• and I finished with my BaBylissPRO flat iron
What I learned:
A good silk press isn’t just about the flat iron — it’s about the prep, moisture, heat protection, and patience 👏🏽
... Read moreWhen I first attempted a silk press at home, I quickly realized it takes much more than just a flat iron to achieve that sleek, shiny finish. The biggest lesson I learned is that proper preparation and moisture restoration are crucial. Starting with a clarifying shampoo like Ouai helps remove product buildup, but it’s essential not to stop there; your hair needs moisture to prevent dryness and breakage.
Using a moisturizing shampoo such as SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo after clarifying helps replenish hydration, which sets a healthy foundation. Deep conditioning is a game changer—applying a rich deep conditioner and using a steamer allows the product to penetrate deeply, making hair softer and more manageable.
Heat protection is a must to avoid damage during styling. I found that using CHI Iron Guard thermal spray shields hair from high temperatures, while CHI Silk Infusion adds softness and a polished finish. When drying, directing airflow with a concentrator nozzle and utilizing a comb attachment to gently stretch the hair reduces frizz and enhances straightening.
Lastly, the choice of flat iron matters—for me, the BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium made a noticeable difference. Patience throughout the process also helps; rushing through can cause uneven results or heat damage. This thorough approach transformed my silk press experience, proving that with the right products and steps, you can achieve a professional-looking finish at home.
These steps align with best practices recommended for natural hairstyles, emphasizing moisture, protection, and careful styling to minimize breakage and maintain healthy hair. Remember, a great silk press starts with healthy, hydrated hair—not just the flat iron itself. This routine not only improves the look but also strengthens and restores the hair over time, making it an essential self-care ritual for anyone aiming to rock a flawless silk press at home.
