4 Hotel Safety Tips You NEED to Know!

Safe travel is my top priority!

When I started traveling with kids, I learned how fast they can open any door! Then I learned how easy it was for someone else to access our hotel room regardless of the extra deadbolt. That’s what started me down hotel room safety deep dive to spot any hazard and ensure our safety while traveling so we can be a safe family wanderer

Because SafetyFirst!

I need something reliable for monitoring and safeguarding my family and that’s what I found in these!

If you’re traveling and worried about hotel room security, these 4 tips are for you!

Hotel break ins are way more common than you think!

Did you know it’s pretty easy to break into a hotel room?

1) Since hotel rooms are not as secure as you think, add extra precaution with a portable door lock when you’re in the room. Takes seconds to install and helps keep the room truly locked!

2) Do balconies freak you out especially with young kids? Add piece of mind with this door alarm that can be set to alert me the second a me door begins to open.

And it can be turned to a loud alarm for added room front door safety!

3) It also comes in a door stop version that is activated should someone open the door.

4) accidents happen in the dark and hotels rarely have nightlights so I pack these mini usb lights so I can see when I wake & need a second to realize where I am.

... Read moreOkay, so we've covered some awesome gadgets like the portable door lock and door alarm that give us that extra peace of mind inside our hotel rooms. But honestly, hotel safety goes way beyond just what's inside your four walls. As someone who's traveled solo and with family, I've picked up a few more habits that turn a 'safe place' into a truly secure sanctuary. These aren't necessarily about buying something new, but more about being smart and aware. First off, even before you step foot into your room, your safety starts at check-in. Have you ever noticed how easily front desk staff might announce your room number out loud? I always make sure to ask them to write it down instead or just discreetly tell me. It's a small thing, but it prevents strangers from knowing exactly where you are. And when you're walking to your room, always be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye out for anyone who might be following you or lingering unnecessarily. Once you open that door for the first time, don't just dump your bags and relax. Take a quick scan. Check that all windows are securely locked – especially if you're on a lower floor or have a balcony. If you're using a doorstop version alarm, make sure it's ready. Locate the emergency exit plan on the back of the door and glance at the route. Knowing your escape path can make all the difference in an emergency. I also always do a quick check behind curtains, under beds, and in closets, just to be absolutely sure. It might sound paranoid, but it takes less than a minute and puts my mind at ease. Throughout your stay, consistently use all the locks provided – the deadbolt, the chain lock – every single time you're in the room. And never, ever prop your door open, even if you're just stepping out for a second. That's an open invitation for trouble. If someone knocks, use the peephole. If you're unsure, call the front desk to verify who they are before opening. It's better to be overly cautious than to regret it. For those of us traveling with kids, or if you're a 'hotel lady' on a solo adventure, these general awareness tips are even more critical. I always teach my kids about 'stranger danger' even in a hotel setting – they know not to open the door for anyone without checking with me first. For solo travelers, consider leaving the TV or radio on low when you leave the room to give the impression someone is still there. And when it comes to valuables, don't leave them out in the open. Use the hotel safe for passports, extra cash, and expensive jewelry. If there's no safe, tuck them away in a less obvious spot, like inside a shoe in your suitcase or a hidden pocket in your bag. Finally, while the original article highlights awesome tools like mini USB lights for navigating in the dark, remember that your intuition is your best safety tool. If something feels off, it probably is. Don't hesitate to report suspicious activity to hotel staff or even relocate to a different room if you genuinely feel unsafe. Being proactive with these HOTEL ROOM SAFETY & SECURITY TIPS means you can truly relax and enjoy your trip, knowing you’ve done everything possible to create your own ‘safe place’ on the road.
