Not your typical murder mystery
I stumbled upon this book thanks to my trusty Goodreads app and let me tell you the rollercoaster it put me through. The book will bounce around to different point of views such as first person and second person. At points of this book you are made to feel as if you are watching the story unfold from the fourth wall of a tv show. At other points you become an actual character of the storyline. The author also takes breaks to introduce different examples of how murder mysteries have been written and how certain elements of those examples have been used in this book. It’s not an easy read and I often found myself going back and having to go back and reread certain parts to make it all make sense (this could very much be a me problem and not a everyone problem). I thought the curveballs were great as I was only able to predict one of the many thrown my way. The reason for the 3.7 stars is I hated the ending. It felt rushed to me. It left me looking up to see if there was a follow up book. I understood what the author was trying to accomplish with the end but it just doesn’t feel complete to me. Maybe that’s all part of the gimmick of this author’s style of writing. Leaving you with more questions than you started with and wanting more from the story. Overall I would absolutely read it again to see if I can pick up on clues that I missed the first time(which funny enough is brought up in a segment in this book).
👍Pros: different style of writing than I’ve ever read before. Kept me engaged throughout the whole story.
🤔Cons: ending was lackluster for me
In 'West Heart Kill,' readers are treated to a distinctive reading experience that shifts between various narrative perspectives, promoting an interactive connection with the characters. The book challenges conventional murder mystery tropes by presenting an experimental writing style, making it a standout choice for fans looking for something fresh. The incorporation of different narrative techniques, such as second-person and first-person viewpoints, allows readers to immerse themselves into the storyline, feeling like part of the unfolding drama. While some may find this style initially confusing, the thrill of unpredictability keeps the engagement high as the plot defies expectations. However, readers have voiced mixed feelings about the conclusion. Many appreciated the unexpected twists throughout the narrative, but felt the ending didn't deliver a satisfying resolution, which led to speculation about potential sequels. Such an ending could indeed be part of the author’s intent, designed to evoke curiosity and provoke thought—leaving readers questioning not just the story but also their interpretations of narrative closure in literature. This tension between well-crafted twists and an abrupt ending exemplifies the complexities of modern storytelling in the genre, making 'West Heart Kill' a fascinating read for those willing to explore its depths.
