Subject 1, Day 23: Stop using debit.

Use your credit cards to build your credit and get cash-back. Stop being afraid of credit, debit is a WASTE.

... Read moreI totally get it why so many people search for 'stop using credit cards.' For a long time, I was right there with you, convinced that credit cards were a trap, a fast lane to debt and financial stress. I genuinely believed that sticking to my debit card was the safest, most responsible way to handle my money. Looking back, I realize that was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made when it comes to credit. I remember getting my first credit card when I was 18, and honestly, I was terrified to use it. I let it sit in my wallet, only pulling out my debit card for everything. What I didn't realize then was that I wasn't just avoiding potential debt; I was missing out on so much more. I wasn't building any credit history, which is crucial for future financial goals like buying a car or a home. And the biggest shocker? I was leaving hundreds of dollars on the table by not earning cash back! My perspective completely shifted when I started to learn about how to use credit cards responsibly. It's not about spending money you don't have; it's about leveraging a tool to your advantage. For instance, most credit cards nowadays offer fantastic rewards – think 2% cash back on everyday purchases, travel points, or discounts. If I had started using my credit card strategically a lot earlier, paying it off in full every month, imagine how much extra money I would have accumulated. It's like getting a small discount on everything you buy, simply by changing your payment method from a debit card that gives you nothing back. So, if you're thinking of ditching your credit cards entirely, or you're afraid to even start, I want to share a different approach. Instead of stopping, consider how you can use them as powerful financial instruments. Here are a few things I learned and now practice: Pay in Full, Always: This is the golden rule. If you can't pay it off completely each month, don't buy it. This way, you avoid interest charges and only benefit from the rewards. Treat It Like Debit: Mentally allocate the money in your checking account for every purchase you make on your credit card. This helps prevent overspending. Automate Payments: Set up autopay for your full statement balance. This ensures you never miss a payment, protecting your credit score. Start Small: If you're nervous, use your credit card for small, predictable expenses like gas or groceries that you know you can easily pay off. Monitor Your Spending: Keep a close eye on your statements and credit card app. This helps you track your budget and spot any fraudulent activity quickly. It's truly a mindset shift. Once I stopped being afraid and started using my credit card wisely, my financial picture improved significantly. I built a solid credit score, which opened doors to better rates on loans, and I started regularly receiving cash back rewards. It truly made me realize that stopping credit cards isn't always the answer; learning to master them is where the real improvement lies. Don't make the same mistakes I did by waiting too long to embrace smart credit use!
