What to make with produce box

2025/9/11 Edited to

... Read moreOh, the joy (and sometimes the delicious challenge!) of opening a fresh produce box! I just love the surprise of seeing what beautiful fruits and veggies I get each week. It's like a culinary treasure hunt, but sometimes I find myself staring at a pile of gorgeous produce, like a big watermelon, crisp romaine lettuce, or a bunch of green beans, and thinking, "Okay, what now?" That's where a little planning and creativity come in handy. Before diving into specific recipes, my first tip is to always assess your haul. Which items are most perishable, like delicate greens or soft plums and dark red cherries? Those are the ones I try to prioritize for meals earlier in the week. Then, I think about versatile staples. Cucumbers and cherry tomatoes, for example, are fantastic in so many dishes. They can be sliced for quick snacks, tossed into any salad (like a vibrant Cherry Tomato Salad!), or even blended into a refreshing gazpacho. A large tomato can be the star of a simple bruschetta or a hearty pasta sauce, while green beans are amazing steamed, sautéed, or roasted. Don't be afraid to think beyond the obvious! If you have something a bit more unique, like artichokes, don't let them intimidate you. Roasting them with a little olive oil and garlic brings out their incredible flavor. Roasting is actually my go-to for almost any vegetable – it transforms even the simplest items into something special. Imagine roasted green beans or even chunks of watermelon for a surprisingly delicious savory-sweet side! When I have a mix of veggies that might be getting a little soft, a hearty stew is my secret weapon. It's so comforting and a great way to use up odds and ends. And for those beautiful fruits, like plums or an abundance of cherries, don't forget about sweet treats! An Apple & Cherry Crisp (or just a plum and cherry crisp!) is always a crowd-plepleaser and a perfect way to end a meal. You can also blend leftover fruit into smoothies for a quick breakfast or snack. To make your produce last longer, remember proper storage. Keep most greens in the fridge in an airtight container or bag with a damp paper towel. Root vegetables love cool, dark places, and fruits like watermelon or plums can often ripen on the counter before moving to the fridge. With a little imagination and these tips, your produce box won't just be a challenge – it'll be a source of endless delicious possibilities!
