“Chickens are Vegetarians”
Letting our ladies free range allows them to be the little dinosaurs they really are.
While you will find a chicken munching on some tender greens, you will find their favorite spots are where the protein is at.
So when you’re here you’ll catch our ladies in the woods most of the time. Hunting for:
-worms & slugs
-berries
-toads
-insects
-rodents
-dead carcasses (left by larger animals/cycle of life)
-seeds
-larvae
You may be shocked to learn some of this but it’s their favorite thing. Especially during molting season when they need that extra boost of protein.
A happy chicken is and omnivore chicken!

While many people believe chickens eat only plant-based diets, the reality is quite different. Chickens are instinctual foragers and thrive in environments where they can hunt for various food sources. This diet includes worms, insects, toads, berries, and even small rodents. These protein-rich foods are crucial for their health, especially during the molting season, a time when chickens shed old feathers and require extra nutrition to support growth. Understanding chickens' natural dietary needs can have the added benefit of enhancing their egg production and overall health. Moreover, contrary to the label on some egg cartons that claims 'vegetarian-fed,' it's essential to recognize that chickens are omnivores. This insight can influence where we source our eggs and how we support local, regenerative farming practices. Chickens in backyard setups or on local farms not only have access to greens but also roam freely, allowing them to hunt and forage, thus ensuring a balanced, nutrient-rich diet that is so vital for their wellbeing. As consumers, we can play a significant role in advocating for farm practices that recognize the natural dietary habits of chickens. Participating in local farmers' markets or choosing eggs from pasture-raised chickens can help shift the industry towards more sustainable practices that honor the true nature of these remarkable birds.
