HOT TAKE: Holiday Decorating

Every year I see stores have all their Christmas decorations out by mid October and more and more people start to decorate as soon as it’s November 1st. I non stop hear the “ITTSSS TIMMMEEEE” from Mariah Carey.

I used to be very strict and must wait for the weekend of Thanksgiving or after to start decorating, however once my man moved in with me, I get so happy and giddy about celebrating the holiday season that I decorate right after my birthday which is mid November. I am strict that I do not want Christmas up when I celebrate my birthday (I must have my time to shine).

But really when do you decorate for the holidays?!

👉🏼 Lucky if I decorate before Dec 25th

Read moreIt's so true how Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' becomes the unofficial kick-off to the holiday season for so many of us, even if it feels like it's still pumpkin spice latte weather! That song always makes me think about when the 'right' time to embrace all things festive truly is. My original article shared my personal shift from waiting until after Thanksgiving to decorating mid-November, mostly because embracing the holiday spirit with my partner has become such a joyful tradition. But what about you? I've heard so many different perspectives, and honestly, there's no wrong answer when it comes to bringing joy into your home. If you're someone who starts on November 1st, I totally get the excitement! Why not extend the magic for as long as possible, especially if it brings happiness during the shorter, colder days? Imagine having those cozy lights up, enjoying the scent of cinnamon, and maybe even baking some festive treats like those adorable Christmas tree cookies I saw last year – they just scream holiday cheer! On the other hand, for those who prefer to wait until after Thanksgiving, there's a certain charm to that too. It creates a clear distinction between the fall holidays and the winter festivities. It's like a grand unveiling, making the Christmas decorations feel even more special. I used to be in this camp, and there's something to be said for savoring each season in its turn. Plus, it gives you a focused window to get everything done without feeling too overwhelmed. Mid-November, my current sweet spot, feels like a good compromise. It gives me enough time to enjoy the decorations without feeling like I've rushed past my birthday. I love putting up my festive Christmas wreath on the front door; it instantly makes the house feel more welcoming and ready for guests. It’s also a great time to start planning holiday crafts or gifts. And for those who are lucky if they decorate before December 25th? You are my people too! Life gets busy, and sometimes just getting a simple string of lights up or a single ornament on a small tree is a victory. The spirit of the holidays isn't defined by how much glitter you spread, but by the warmth and connection you share. Ultimately, the 'when' of holiday decorating is such a personal journey. Do you find that certain music cues, like hearing your favorite Christmas jingle, instantly make you want to pull out the tinsel? Or do you prefer a more gradual shift, perhaps starting with subtle touches and building up to the full festive display? I'd love to know what triggers your holiday decorating mood! It's all about what makes you feel happy and gets you in the festive spirit. Whether it's the first snowflake, the smell of pine, or Mariah Carey's iconic high notes, let your joy guide your decorating timeline.
