That video showed a super easy way to get gorgeous curls from a braid-out, but what if you're aiming for that luscious 'blowout with curls' look on your natural hair without the heat damage? It’s totally achievable, and often, your trusty braid-out is the secret weapon! Many of us with black hair dream of that bouncy, voluminous look that screams "blowout" but want to protect our natural strands. The beauty of a well-executed braid-out is that it provides a fantastic stretched foundation, mimicking the elongation you'd get from a blowout, making it perfect for then creating soft, defined curls. Here’s how I tweak my braid-out routine to really get that 'blowout with curls' vibe. First, it starts with clean, well-moisturized hair. I always make sure my hair is damp, not soaking wet, before applying my styling cream or mousse. For that extra stretch and volume, I opt for larger, looser braids if I want more of a wavy, stretched curl, or smaller, tighter braids if I’m aiming for more defined spirals that still have bounce. The key is ensuring your hair is completely dry before taking them down. Sleeping with a satin bonnet or pillowcase is non-negotiable for me to prevent frizz and keep my braids intact overnight. When it's time for the big reveal – usually in the morning when I'm styling my hair before work – I carefully unravel each braid. Instead of pulling them apart immediately, I gently separate the sections with my fingers, applying a little bit of lightweight oil to my hands. This helps reduce frizz and adds shine. For that true "blowout with curls" effect, I focus on lifting the roots. Sometimes, a pick or hair dryer on a cool setting (briefly!) at the roots can add incredible volume without compromising the curl pattern. You can also enhance those curls. If your braid-out gives you more waves than curls, don't fret! You can use a curling wand on low heat, taking large sections and wrapping them around the barrel just once or twice to add a soft bend, or even use large flexi-rods on dry hair for an hour or so. The goal is bouncy, free-flowing curls that look like you just left the salon. Products are crucial here. I swear by a good leave-in conditioner for moisture, a light styling cream for hold without stiffness, and a finishing spray to combat humidity. For achieving that "blowout" volume, look for products specifically designed to add lift at the roots. And remember, less is often more when it comes to separating and fluffing; you don't want to lose all that hard-earned definition! This method has saved me so much time and kept my natural hair healthy while still allowing me to rock that coveted voluminous, curly look. It’s perfect for anyone wanting a gorgeous, heatless alternative to a traditional blowout with curls, especially for black hair. Give it a try next time you're styling your hair before work – you might just find your new go-to style!
