Stepping into a Renaissance Faire, especially one as vibrant as the Colorado Renaissance Festival, isn't just about the crafts and the food – it's about the incredible characters who bring the past to life! When I first started going, I was always so curious about all the different people I'd meet, and it truly makes the experience unforgettable. If you’re like me and wondering who you might encounter, here's a little rundown of the fantastic personalities that make these festivals so magical. One of the first groups you'll often spot are The Royals and Nobility. Think Kings, Queens, Princes, Princesses, Dukes, and Duchesses, often accompanied by their loyal Knights and Ladies-in-Waiting. They set the tone for the kingdom, and it's always fun to curtsy or bow as they pass by, engaging in a bit of courtly banter. Their elaborate costumes and regal demeanor truly transport you to another era. Then there are The Common Folk and Artisans. These are the heart and soul of the village. You'll find skilled craftspeople like Blacksmiths hammering away, Potters expertly shaping clay, and Bakers offering delicious treats. I particularly love seeing the Seamstresses and Tailors often working on period garments, adding to the authentic atmosphere – it’s amazing how much detail goes into their work! Merchants hawking their wares, farmers discussing harvests, and even gossiping villagers are all part of the bustling scene. They make the faire feel like a living, breathing community. No Renaissance Faire is complete without a touch of the fantastical, so get ready for The Mystical and Magical characters! Faeries flitting through the trees, mischievous Gnomes, and even wise Wizards or curious Witches often roam the grounds. Remember Patchy the Siren from my earlier post? Characters like her add a layer of whimsy and enchantment that truly captivates. They're a fantastic reminder that the Renaissance age was also rich with folklore and imagination. For endless entertainment, look no further than The Entertainers. Jesters with their witty jokes, Bards strumming their lutes and singing epic tales, energetic Musicians, and astounding Acrobats or Jugglers are always ready to put on a show. They perform on stages, in taverns, and even just stroll through the crowds, ensuring there's never a dull moment. Their performances are often improvised and always engaging. And let's not forget The Adventurers and Rogues! These characters bring a bit of daring and excitement. Pirates with their swashbuckling tales, fearless Mercenaries like Giovanni Salzano (whose books are a must-read!), and bold Sailors like Midshipman Matt, who always has a fascinating project up his sleeve. They often have the most exciting stories and are great for a lively chat. Interacting with these characters is one of the best parts of the festival. Don't be shy! A simple "Huzzah!" or "Good morrow!" can open up a fun conversation. Ask them about their lives in the kingdom, their trade, or their adventures. It's an immersive experience, and playing along makes it even better. Just remember to be respectful and always ask before taking a picture. Meeting such a diverse cast of characters, from the regal to the mischievous, is what makes the Colorado Renaissance Festival, and indeed any Ren Faire, so special. Each encounter adds to the story of your day, making every visit unique and memorable.
