What I ate (and shared) in a day in Puerto Rico 🌸

... Read moreMy recent trip to Puerto Rico was an absolute dream, not just for the beautiful scenery but especially for the incredible food! Every meal felt like a celebration of culture and flavor. When I was there, exploring the vibrant streets of Ponce and San Juan, I made it my mission to try as many authentic dishes as possible. One of the highlights was definitely diving into a generous platter of Puerto Rican appetizers. It was the perfect way to sample a little bit of everything! We had crispy tostones, which are twice-fried plantain slices – so simple yet so addictive, especially with a garlicky dipping sauce. Alongside them were some savory yucca fries, offering a different starchy texture. And oh, the bacalaitos! These are crispy codfish fritters, bursting with a salty, oceanic flavor that's just irresistible. We also tried some delicious croquetas de bacalao, which were creamy on the inside and perfectly golden brown outside. Plus, for a lighter option, there were always some flavorful veggie empanadas, packed with seasoned fillings. It’s truly a feast for the senses and an absolute must-try when you're looking for an authentic Puerto Rican food experience, whether for a snack or to kick off a meal. For a main course, I was delighted to find some fantastic birria tacos. These were served with fresh tortilla chips, a dollop of cool lime crema, and a rich, savory consommé for dipping. The tender, slow-cooked meat was just incredible, and dipping the taco into that flavorful broth? Pure heaven! While birria isn't traditionally Puerto Rican, it's a testament to the island's diverse culinary influences, and you can find many amazing fusion spots. If you're looking for more classic Puerto Rican main dishes, keep an eye out for mofongo (mashed plantains often stuffed with meat or seafood) or lechón (roasted pork), which are staples on any good Puerto Rican food menu. And speaking of diverse treats, I even indulged in a Burger King coquito shake! Yes, you read that right. It was a creamy, sweet, and surprisingly delicious take on the traditional coconut-based holiday drink, topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. It was a fun, unexpected find and a testament to how local flavors permeate even international chains here. Another fantastic snack we discovered were fresh elotes, or Mexican street corn. These cobs were slathered with creamy crema fresca, sprinkled with salty cotija cheese, fresh cilantro, and a hint of smoky ancho chile. It’s a messy but utterly delicious experience, perfect for a quick bite while exploring. For those planning their day, don't forget about breakfast Puerto Rico food! Many local bakeries and cafes offer incredible options. Think freshly brewed strong coffee, warm and slightly sweet pan de mallorca (a spiral-shaped brioche-like bread, often served with butter or ham and cheese), or even a simple yet satisfying plate of scrambled eggs with local sausage. Exploring these local spots for breakfast is a fantastic way to start your day and really get a feel for the daily life and culinary traditions. Finding good food in Puerto Rico is all about being adventurous and asking locals for their favorite hidden gems. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!
