How I store my keycap sets 💜
I have tried a few different storage techniques for keycaps and switches. This one from Michaels is my favorite one!
Currently, I have two of these containers to effectively store and organize my keycaps without taking up too much valuable room space. The handle makes it super convenient to carry around during a moving process or when you’re simply looking to swap keycaps.
Each mini container measures a little over 4” x 6” that’s also a perfect storage case for photos, small tech, stickers, and other crafting supplies. Full, larger keycap sets may take up about 2-3 mini cases.
Worth? Yes, yes, yes!
💲Original price: $41.99

While my Michaels organizer is a total lifesaver for everyday keycap storage, I know many of you, like me, might have a growing collection of unique or limited-edition keycap sets that need extra special care. It's not just about tidiness; proper storage protects your investment! Dust, scratches, or losing that one crucial keycap from a full set can be heartbreaking, especially for those beautiful, colorful keycaps you spent so much time choosing. Beyond those clear plastic storage containers I adore, I've seen friends use dedicated keycap trays designed to hold individual caps, or even small tackle boxes for a similar multi-compartment approach. For smaller, less frequently used sets or extra modifiers, simple resealable bags can work, but I always make sure they're airtight to prevent dust and keep those various keycaps safe. Whatever method you choose, ensuring your keycaps are clean before storage is key to preventing any grime from building up. My biggest tip? Label everything! Whether it's a small sticky note inside each clear compartment or a label on the outside of your bigger storage case, knowing exactly which set is where saves so much time when you're planning your next keyboard build. I try to group my keycaps by profile (like Cherry, SA, or OEM) or by theme/color palette. It makes finding those perfect accent keycaps so much easier! Different keycap materials also have different needs. PBT keycaps are generally more durable and resistant to shine, but ABS can sometimes be prone to shining over time, so keeping them in a cool, dark place is often recommended. And for those precious artisan keycaps or limited-run sets, I often keep them in their original packaging or a dedicated display case to really show them off while keeping them safe. The small clear compartments in my current organizer are also fantastic for these special pieces. For anyone looking to expand their collection or find those super unique, eye-catching keycaps, don't be afraid to explore different vendors beyond the big names. There's a whole community out there creating incredible custom keycap sets, often in small batches. Keeping an eye on group buys or mechanical keyboard forums can lead you to some real gems, ensuring you always have new, colorful keycaps to organize! Ultimately, a well-organized keycap collection makes building and customizing your keyboard so much more enjoyable. It turns what could be a messy pile of plastic into a treasure trove of possibilities, ready for your next desk setup upgrade. Happy organizing!
