My Thoughts on the IKEA Malm Desk

I have had this desk for about two years now and it has gone through one move so far. It held up a lot better than I thought it would considering the drawer and blocky design, but there are some downsides to mainly the finish of the desktop surface.

💭 It was good at the time for the time at an about $180 price. Now, I think I would choose to instead do a different method of building my own with the tabletop separate from the legs. Or, an alternative, a standing desk.

Though it features sturdy storage drawers that can be placed on either side, one common complaint is its glossy surface. Users frequently report that this finish scratches easily and tends to show fingerprints, compromising its aesthetic appeal. For those considering purchase, it's essential to weigh these negatives against the positives. At a retail price of around $180, the desk provides good value initially, but many find that considering alternatives—like building a custom desk or opting for a standing desk—may be a better investment in the long run. Custom options allow you to choose materials and designs that fit your personal taste and usage needs, ultimately leading to a more satisfying workspace solution. Explore other options that can provide a balance between functionality and style, ensuring your desk meets both aesthetic and practical requirements.

I had that desk too! It looked great, but the scratches...ugh. I ended up painting mine, which helped a bit. Now I’m eyeing a standing desk. So much better for my back.
