The Lumbee people finally get federally recognized

Today, my heart is overflowing with emotion as our Lumbee Tribe finally, finally received federal recognition. It's a day many of us, and especially our elders and ancestors, have dreamed of for generations. This isn't just a political act; it's a profound acknowledgment of our identity, our history, and our inherent sovereignty. For me, seeing this come to fruition feels like a weight has been lifted, and a powerful sense of validation has settled upon our community. It truly is a historic #575 moment. When we talk about '575 Lumbee,' we're often referring to the long journey and the specific legislation that brought us to this monumental day. For many years, the Lumbee Recognition Act, often identified by its bill number like H.R. 575, has been a critical beacon of hope. This act sought to grant the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina the full federal recognition that other tribes already possess, correcting a historical injustice that has persisted for centuries.
