the coziest savory bread recipe 😮💨🔥
Okay but I was *not* prepared for how good this jalapeño cheddar cowboy bread turned out 😮💨🔥crispy on the outside, soft and cheesy on the inside, with just the perfect little kick! It’s one of those recipes you make “just to try” and then suddenly you’re on your third slice… 👀🫠
My husband typically hates anything that has even a little spicy kick to it, but he LOVES this bread!! 🙌🏻
Here’s the deets on how to make it:
Ingredients:
* 1 cup flour
* 1 cup cornmeal
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1 tbsp baking powder
* 1/2 tsp salt
* 1 cup milk
* 1/3 cup oil (vegetable or canola)
* 1 egg
* 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar is best)
* Optional: 1/2 cup cooked bacon bits or jalapeños for extra flavor
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 400°F and grease a small baking dish or cast iron skillet. In a bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
In another bowl, whisk milk, oil, and egg. Combine wet + dry ingredients until just mixed, then fold in the shredded cheese (and bacon/jalapeños if using).
Pour into your pan and bake for 20–25 minutes (depending what size pan you’re using, may need to bake longer) until golden on top. You may need to stick a toothpick in after awhile to make sure the texture is nice and fluffy, and not soggy/not fully baked!

Making jalapeño cheddar cowboy bread at home is honestly one of my favorite ways to enjoy fresh, savory bread with a little kick. What I love most about this recipe is how versatile it is—you can easily tweak the spice level by adjusting the amount of jalapeños or choosing milder peppers if preferred. I usually like to add cooked bacon bits for an added smoky depth, which pairs beautifully with the sharp cheddar cheese. The combination of flour and cornmeal creates a unique texture that balances softness with just the right amount of crunch on the crust, especially when baked in a cast iron skillet. A quick tip I've learned is to always grease the pan well, so the bread doesn’t stick and you get that perfect golden finish. Also, don’t skip the toothpick test before removing it from the oven to ensure the bread is fully baked inside but still delightfully fluffy. If you want to enhance the cheesy flavor, try mixing a bit of sharp cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese together. Both melt wonderfully and add richness. Serving this bread warm with a dab of butter is simply irresistible. This bread has quickly become my go-to for weekend breakfasts or to bring to potlucks because it’s easy to prepare, doesn’t require yeast or rising time, and always impresses guests. Plus, it’s a great way to introduce a bit of heat for those who are just starting to explore spicy foods—like my husband, who surprisingly loves it! For those who are cautious about spice, removing the seeds from the jalapeños before adding them can lessen the heat while still keeping the flavor intact. And if you want to get creative, consider adding herbs like chives or rosemary for an extra savory touch. Overall, this jalapeño cheddar cowboy bread is a deliciously cozy recipe that’s simple to make and perfect for sharing. I highly recommend trying it out and customizing it to your taste!
