Throughout my experiences within the dog community, I've witnessed firsthand how deeply personal and political issues can intersect, especially when it involves ICE operations. Caring for dogs is often seen as a simple act of love and responsibility, but when families face the trauma of detainment or separation due to immigration enforcement, the challenge extends far beyond pet care. Many people share heartbreaking stories of losing not just their freedom but also the ability to protect and nurture their furry companions. The statement, "You can't take care of your dogs if ICE murders you," resonates on multiple levels. It reflects the urgent need to recognize that immigration policies are not just bureaucratic details—they affect real lives and communities. For many, pets are family members, sources of comfort and stability amid uncertainty. When the stability of a household is shattered by ICE raids or detentions, it compromises the well-being of all involved, including animals. Being part of the #dogcommunity, especially in areas like Minneapolis, has made me increasingly aware of these overlapping struggles. We cannot separate animal welfare from social justice because the care for our dogs often depends on the broader context of human rights and safety. Advocating for humane immigration policies, including calls to #abolishICE, is not only a political stance but a plea for preserving lives, dignity, and the bonds between owners and their pets.
