My partner and I also faced this wonderful challenge a few years ago, wanting to blend our individual family customs and create something uniquely 'us.' It's all about making those special moments that turn into cherished memories. When we first moved in, I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the possibilities. We started by thinking about what truly mattered to us during the holidays. Was it food? Decorations? Giving back? We realized it was a mix of everything! One of our favorite things we started was a 'Christmas Eve Box.' Instead of just waiting for the morning, we open a special box on Christmas Eve filled with new pajamas, a festive movie, hot cocoa, and a new ornament. It's become a cozy ritual that really builds anticipation. It’s a simple tradition but brings so much joy. Food, of course, is a huge part of many holiday traditions. We now have a 'cookie baking day' where we invite friends over, play Christmas music, and make a huge mess (in the best way!). Everyone goes home with a tin of assorted cookies, and it’s a lovely way to connect. On Christmas morning, instead of a big fancy meal, we opt for a relaxed pancake and bacon brunch, complete with festive sprinkles. It’s easy, delicious, and means more time for gifts and lounging. Decorating is another area where you can really make your mark. Beyond just putting up the tree, consider a specific theme for your tree ornaments each year, or a dedicated spot for holiday cards from loved ones. We started a tradition of buying one special ornament from a trip we took that year, or to commemorate a big life event. It’s so fun to unpack them each year and remember the stories. Another idea is driving around to look at Christmas lights with a thermos of hot chocolate – a classic that never gets old! For activities, consider volunteering together at a local charity or food bank. It’s a wonderful way to give back and remember the true spirit of the season. Or, if you're looking for something more low-key, pick a classic holiday book to read aloud on a cold evening or have a marathon of your favorite festive films. Starting your own holiday traditions doesn't have to be complicated. The key is to find things that resonate with both of you and create a sense of togetherness. Don't feel pressured to do everything at once. Pick one or two things to try this year, and if they stick, great! If not, you can always try something new next year. The beauty of new traditions is that they evolve with you. What matters most is the intention behind them: to celebrate, connect, and create lasting joy in your new home.
