I thought I had my life planned out

Back in 2016 when I chose my degree, I genuinely thought it would decide the rest of my life. Study hard, graduate, find a stable job related to what I studied, then stay on that path forever. Even so when I chose to get my PhD.

That was the plan I believed in for years… but honestly, I don’t regret studying what I did.

It taught me discipline, how to think and how to see the world in a deeper perspective.

Somewhere along the way though, I started to feel something was off. Not wrong, just… not fully right.

I realised that what I wanted wasn’t just stability.

I wanted growth, to challenge myself, to become more confident, more capable, more independent.

And that meant stepping into something unfamiliar, stepping out of my comfort zone. Making that decision wasn’t easy. Not because I didn’t believe in myself, but because I wasn’t sure if this was meant for me.

When you’ve spent years studying something, it feels like you’re supposed to stick with it forever. Like changing direction means you wasted time.

But now I see it differently.

Nothing was wasted. Every experience built the person I am today. And every step forward, even the uncertain ones, is still progress.

I don’t have everything figured out. I’m still building, still learning and still growing into the person I want to become.

But one thing I know for sure is that you’re not stuck just because you chose one path before. You’re allowed to evolve, to explore and to build a life that actually excites you.

If you’re also in that phase of figuring things out, just know you’re not alone. We’re all building our lives one decision at a time.

... Read moreChanging career direction can be daunting, especially after investing years in education and training. However, many people have found that what initially feels like a detour actually becomes a vital part of their personal development journey. From my experience, the decision to step out of a familiar, stable path brought more growth and satisfaction than I ever expected. One important realization is that education and past experiences are never wasted. They shape your thinking, discipline, and worldview, providing a foundation upon which you can build new skills and confidence. Instead of a rigid plan, life is more like a series of evolving opportunities where each step informs the next. Taking the leap into the unknown often means challenging limiting beliefs, such as the idea that changing direction means failure or wasted time. This mindset shift is critical. Growth comes when you allow yourself to explore interests beyond what you initially planned. Each new challenge encourages independence and resilience. If you’re considering a career switch or facing uncertainty, remember that many people have been in your shoes. It helps to view this phase as an ongoing journey rather than a fixed destination. Seeking support from peers or career coaches can provide guidance and encouragement. Setting small achievable goals can also create momentum, transforming anxiety into excitement. Ultimately, a fulfilling career isn’t just about stability; it’s about continual learning and becoming more capable and confident. By embracing change and the unknown, you give yourself the chance to build a life and career that truly excites and enriches you.
