Blunicorn

Inspired a bit by “The Last Unicorn” the film, I drew this whimsical lil guy. At first I was going to make him mossy green and highlight the mushrooms growing off of him, but I really loved how the blue and purple came out.

What do you think? 🦄 🪄 🌹

... Read moreIt's so exciting to share the journey behind my latest whimsical creation, the Blunicorn! When I first started sketching, I had a completely different vision. I was initially leaning towards a mossy green creature, imagining ancient forest spirits with mushrooms literally sprouting right off its hide. But as often happens with creative flow, the colors started to call out to me differently. I found myself reaching for those vibrant blues and purples, and honestly, I just fell in love with how they brought this creature to life. The inspiration from 'The Last Unicorn' film runs deep in this piece. That movie truly captures a sense of magic, melancholy, and unique fantasy creatures that always stuck with me. I wanted to evoke a similar sense of wonder and gentle mystery, but with my own playful twist. Instead of a traditional, elegant unicorn, I aimed for something more quirky and endearing. That's how the idea of a 'Blunicorn' came to be – a creature that feels both familiar and entirely new. Looking at the details, I focused on making it truly unique. The blue and teal tones for its body give it an ethereal, almost aquatic feel, perfectly complemented by the rich purple of its mane, tail, and leg fur. What I really loved adding were the little pink mushroom-like growths and spots on its body. They add to that whimsical, forest-dweller vibe, even though the primary colors shifted. And the glowing horn? It was a must! I pictured it radiating a soft, magical light, cradling a delicate pink flower as though it just plucked it from a secret garden. It’s all drawn right there on a sketchbook page, capturing that raw, immediate feeling of bringing an idea to life. For anyone out there who loves creating their own fantasy creatures, my biggest tip is to let your imagination guide you, even if it means deviating from your initial plan. Sometimes the best ideas emerge when you're open to experimentation. Don't be afraid to play with unexpected color palettes or add quirky details that make your character truly yours. Think about what story your creature tells, what world it inhabits, and how its appearance reflects that. What kind of magical energies does it possess? What are its unique characteristics? Even the smallest details, like the type of flower or the glow of a horn, can add so much personality. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this Blunicorn! Have you ever started a piece with one idea and ended up with something completely different and wonderful? What are your favorite elements of fantasy creature design? Sharing our artistic journeys helps us all grow and find new inspiration!
