I’ve been going down a rabbit hole learning about Phyllis Hyman’s life, and honestly, it’s heartbreaking.

The more I listen to her music, the more I realize how much pain seemed to be woven into so many of her songs. Then to find out that she died by suicide makes me hear her music differently.

It makes me wonder… what was really going on behind the scenes? Was she surrounded by people who genuinely loved her and knew how much she was hurting? Could things have been different if she had a stronger support system? Or was she fighting battles within herself that no amount of love from others could have fixed?

Mental health is so complex. Sometimes people can be talented, successful, beautiful, admired by millions, and still feel completely alone.

Phyllis Hyman’s story reminds me that we never really know what someone is carrying. Her voice gave so much to the world, yet it seems she was carrying a tremendous amount of pain herself.

I can’t stop thinking about her life, her music, and all the “what ifs.” What if she had gotten the help she needed? What if the people around her recognized the depth of her struggle? What if she had stayed?

Anybody else ever gone back and listened to an artist’s music after learning their story and heard it completely differently?

... Read moreDiving deeper into Phyllis Hyman’s story has been an eye-opening experience for me, especially regarding how mental health challenges can profoundly affect even those who seem to have it all. Phyllis was a gifted artist whose soulful voice captivated millions, yet beneath that talent was a silent struggle that many rarely saw. It’s a solemn reminder that success and admiration do not always equate to happiness or inner peace. From what I’ve learned, Hyman’s music often carried subtle hints of her inner battles, and now, listening to her songs, I can sense layers of pain and longing that were previously unnoticed. This experience has changed how I approach music, especially when I discover more about an artist’s life story. It adds depth and a new dimension to the listening experience. Another point worth reflecting on is the importance of mental health support. Artists like Phyllis often face tremendous pressure alongside their personal issues. Having a strong support system can sometimes make a critical difference, though it’s never a guaranteed solution. Her story highlights how critical it is to create safe, understanding environments where people can share their struggles without stigma. If you’ve ever found yourself revisiting an artist’s work after learning more about their life, you might relate to this shift in perception. It’s a powerful reminder that behind every song or performance is a human being with a story that deserves compassion and awareness. In honoring Phyllis Hyman's legacy, we also remind ourselves to check in on the mental wellbeing of those around us, acknowledging that struggles aren’t always visible but deeply significant.

I grew up in real time of the life of Phyllis Hyman. And yes her voice was so beautiful and she had skills like no other. On the ballads Living All Alone and Old Friend thats her whistling. She was tall and beautiful and could wear a fedora like no other. Back in the day and still is to my knowledge the music industry only wanted women to be thin. No matter how they could sang their face off they had a body image problem and that was one if not the main issues of her career. I had all of her work but after she passed I broke them all and threw them away. Why because as I listened I too heard that depression and I didnt want that spirit and didnt want to contribute to anyone else either. You may not believe that but my mother would listen to Billie Holiday songs and she would get so depressed and cry. But Phyllis Hyman was a phenomenal singer and I still think about her from time to time when Im out and I hear one of her songs.

I wish that someone would do a movie or monologue about her and Donnie Hathaway
