Say it right: Kay-Show ✨

Hi, I’m Keysho — pronounced Kay-Show 💖. Not Kesho, not Key-sha… Kay-Show.

Your name is your identity, your story, and your power. I used to let people slide with mispronunciations, but now I correct them with confidence ✨.

💬 Your turn: Do people ever mispronounce your name? Drop your story below ⬇️

... Read moreIt's incredible how a name, just a few syllables, can hold so much of who we are. When my name is mispronounced, it often feels like a tiny piece of my identity is overlooked. For a long time, I'd just let it go, a quick nod and a silent correction in my head. But over time, I realized that constantly allowing mispronunciations was diminishing my own sense of self-worth. It’s not about being pedantic; it’s about respect and recognizing the unique story woven into each person’s name. I remember thinking, 'Is it really a big deal?' But then I'd hear my name twisted into 'Kesho' or 'Key-sha,' and it just didn't feel like *me*. That's when I decided to reclaim that small but significant part of my identity. It wasn't easy at first. There's an awkwardness in correcting someone, especially if you're not used to it. My strategy evolved from a shy mumble to a confident, yet polite, 'Actually, it's pronounced Kay-Show.' Sometimes, I even add a little tip, like 'Think of 'kay' as in 'okay' and 'show' as in 'showtime'!' This often gets a smile and helps people remember. It’s about education, not confrontation. It's fascinating how names can be so similar yet so different in meaning. Take 'Kesho,' for example, which some people mistakenly call me. I discovered through my own research that 'Kesho' is a beautiful Swahili word meaning 'tomorrow' or 'the future.' It’s a term often used with hope and aspiration, like by organizations such as the Kenya Kesho School for Girls, which aims to empower young women. While it carries a wonderful meaning, it's simply not my name. Understanding this distinction, and being able to explain it gently, has actually made it easier to correct people and even sparks interesting conversations about language and culture. Knowing the context behind a common mispronunciation can be really empowering! It highlights why taking the time to learn and use someone's correct name is a gesture of respect. Beyond just the personal feeling, consistent mispronunciation can sometimes affect professional interactions or even how you're perceived. It sends a subtle message that details aren't important, or that your identity isn't being fully acknowledged. Correcting it ensures clarity and shows that you value yourself enough to ensure others do too. For anyone struggling with similar experiences, I encourage you to find your voice. Your name is a gift, a fundamental part of your personal brand and heritage. Don't shy away from asserting it. Start small, perhaps with friends or new acquaintances. A simple, 'Just so you know, it's pronounced [correct pronunciation]' can make a world of difference. It's not just for you; it sets a precedent for how you wish to be addressed, fostering deeper respect in your interactions. Let's empower each other to honor our names and the stories they tell. What are your tips for gracefully correcting someone?
