Practice makes perfect
I really wanted to start tracking my journey on becoming a better braider. I’m obtaining my braiding license to be able to be Loctician in a shop; however, I figured since I’m getting the license, why just stop at locs! I’m open to any suggestions or tips for products and techniques. I’ve done my and my son’s locs for several years and believe it’s time to hone my craft.
Embarking on the path to becoming a licensed braider has been both exciting and challenging. From my experience, one of the most important aspects is consistent practice, as the title suggests: Practice makes perfect. Initially, focusing on my own hair and my son's locs gave me foundational knowledge about hair texture, scalp health, and maintenance routines. However, when branching out to braids beyond locs, I found that experimenting with different types of threads, oils, and moisturizers greatly improved the outcome and longevity of styles. I highly recommend investing in a good leave-in conditioner and a light, natural oil like jojoba or coconut oil to maintain scalp moisture and prevent breakage during braiding sessions. Additionally, using edge control products can help with neatness around hairlines. Watching tutorial videos and joining online braiding communities also provides invaluable tips, support, and inspiration. For anyone starting as a beginner braider, patience is key. Learning how to control tension and create uniform braids takes time. I have noticed that consistent hand positioning and maintaining relaxed grip reduces strain and improves braid neatness. Furthermore, familiarizing yourself with different braid patterns and styles can add variety and professionalism to your work, making you more versatile for clients. Pursuing a braiding license has motivated me to deepen my understanding of hair care and styling techniques, encouraging me to attend workshops and seek mentorship. If you’re considering a similar path, I suggest finding local training programs that emphasize sanitation and customer care, as these are crucial for success in any salon environment. Overall, embracing the journey with an open mind and willingness to learn has elevated my skills and confidence. I encourage fellow beginners and loc enthusiasts to share experiences and product discoveries because growing together makes us all better braiders.
