Today as I read in Exodus, I realized I have a bad habit of just skimming through verses like these. “Burnt offferings and altars what’s that got to do with me?” Anyone else in this boat? But as I took a moment to rewind and truly engage with the text, I discovered a profound lesson about worship that I had overlooked.
GOD REALLY DOES CARE HOW WE WORSHIP HIM!
He doesn’t demand a specific routine or dictate the number of times we should pray, BUT He does want our worship to be rooted in humility. Exodus 20:23-26 brought this truth to light for me. In these verses, God instructed the Israelites to build altars of EARTH... as in dirt. When making an altar of stone, He specifically said it should not be dressed or hewn, meaning no engravings no embellishments, no sparklies. He wanted it simple and unembellished.
God values simplicity over spectacle. He wants our worship to be humble and personal. Instead of grand shows, He desires authenticity. True worship comes from the heart and is a genuine expression of love for God. Simple acts like a quiet prayer, singing a heartfelt song alone, or showing kindness to others can be powerful forms of worship. We should also avoid making our worship big and flashy just to impress others. God isn’t looking for public displays that draw attention to ourselves; He wants our hearts. Our worship should come from a place of humility, not a desire to impress. It reminds us that the most meaningful expressions of worship are often the simplest, grounded in sincerity and love.
Let’s strive to worship Him in a way that honors His desire for humility and authenticity, allowing our hearts to connect with His in a beautiful, personal way.
