It's a question I get asked often, and one I've spent a lot of time reflecting on myself: 'What's my ethnicity?' For me, it's a beautiful tapestry woven from two distinct, vibrant cultures: Bahamian and Chinese. It's more than just a label; it's a journey of understanding, celebrating, and sometimes navigating two rich heritages. Growing up, my Bahamian side was always a source of immense pride and joy. When people ask, 'is Bahamian an ethnicity?' or 'what race is Bahamian?', I explain that being Bahamian is about a rich cultural identity shaped by history, geography, and incredible traditions. I remember the smell of fresh conch fritters sizzling, a staple in our household, often served with a tangy dipping sauce. And holidays were never complete without a hearty plate of cracked conch, often alongside flavourful rice and that creamy, unforgettable Bahamian mac & cheese. These aren't just foods; they're memories, connections to family gatherings, and the very essence of Bahamian life. Seeing the vibrant colors of the Bahamian flag always fills me with a sense of belonging and warmth. It's about the warmth of the people, the rhythm of the Junkanoo, and the stories passed down through generations. Then there's my Chinese heritage, equally influential and cherished. Exploring my Chinese roots has been a fascinating experience, full of delicious discoveries and ancient traditions. My family introduced me to the incredible diversity of Chinese cuisine – from the comforting noodles of chow mein to crispy spring rolls and countless other Chinese takeout delights that always brought us together. Learning about the significance of different dishes, the art of using chopsticks, and even the beauty of traditional clothing like a kimono has deepened my appreciation for this part of my ethnicity. It's a connection to a history spanning millennia, filled with deep philosophical thought, intricate art forms, and strong family values. Being of mixed Bahamian ethnicity and Chinese heritage means I get to experience the best of both worlds. It’s a constant learning process, embracing holiday customs from one side, while enjoying the culinary delights of the other. Sometimes, people are curious, asking 'what race is Bahamian?' or 'what's my ethnicity?', and I love sharing how these two identities intertwine within me. It’s not always straightforward; there are moments of explaining and clarifying, but mostly, it’s about celebrating a unique identity. My heritage has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the profound beauty of cultural diversity. Ultimately, what's my ethnicity is a question that leads to a beautiful journey of self-discovery. It's about recognizing that our identity isn't just one thing, but a rich mosaic of experiences, traditions, and connections that make us who we are. It's a privilege to carry both the spirit of the Bahamas and the wisdom of China within me.
