She wants me to be her nanny

My best friend recently became a single mom. I was there for her through everything the pregnancy, the birth, the sleepless nights. Before the baby came, she asked if I could help out sometimes, and I said yes. But “sometimes” slowly turned into every day.

She’d call me to cancel my plans, skip class, or leave work early to babysit. And when I said no, she’d guilt-trip me “You don’t understand how hard it is,” or “You promised you’d be there for me.”

Things blew up when I told her I got accepted into a study-abroad program. Instead of being happy for me, she cried and said I was abandoning her and her baby. I told her I love her, but I’m not the baby’s parent I can’t put my life on hold.

She hung up and hasn’t spoken to me since. Now her mom says I “dumped her when she needed real help,” and I feel torn.

I want to be supportive… but I also deserve to live my own life. Does that make me selfish?
