The hashtags like #ဝက်ခြံပျောက်ခြင်သူများ (meaning 'disappearing pig farmers') highlight an emerging crisis where traditional pig-rearing practices are under threat. From personal observations, small-scale pig farmers often struggle with lack of resources, veterinary care, and protection against diseases, which exacerbate the decline. Moreover, younger generations are moving away from agriculture-based livelihoods, further endangering these traditional practices. Local initiatives such as #protect and #meikomyanmar reflect community-driven movements to raise awareness and provide support for these farmers. These movements advocate for better veterinary services, sustainable farming practices, and governmental assistance to ensure the survival of local pig breeds. They also encourage consumers to support locally-raised pork to maintain economic viability. Understanding the cultural importance of pig farming in Myanmar is crucial, as pigs contribute not only to farmers' income but also play roles in local festivals and food heritage. Protecting them means preserving an integral part of Myanmar’s rural fabric. Engaging with these community efforts, spreading awareness via social media platforms, and supporting policies that aid smallholder farmers could help reverse the trend. Through combined action, we can safeguard the future of Myanmar’s pig farming and the livelihoods tied to it.
