A popular author I always DNF

This might be controversial…

I’ve tried reading a few of Ali Hazelwood’s books, but I always end up DNF-ing (did not finish). I think it is mostly because of her characters and their personalities.

What “Love on the Brain” is about:

This novel follows the story of a neuroscientist, Dr. Bee Königswasser, who embarks on a career-high assignment of co-leading a project at NASA but has to contend with working alongside her old grad school nemesis, Levi Ward.

... Read moreI totally get what you mean about Ali Hazelwood's characters! It's wild how polarizing they can be, and it often comes down to individual preferences for writing style and character development. I've noticed a distinct writing style in her books that really leans into the academic, STEM-focused world. You often find super witty (or, depending on your taste, occasionally overly verbose) internal monologues. Her heroines are typically brilliant, a bit awkward, and frequently dealing with relatable issues like imposter syndrome. However, there's definitely that 'insufferable' quality some readers, like myself, pick up on. Sometimes their naivety can be a bit much, or their internal dialogue gets repetitive. For 'Love on the Brain,' specifically, Bee and Levi definitely had their quirks. I remember feeling a bit frustrated with some of their communication issues, even though the premise of rival scientists at NASA was so fun and unique. It's that fine line between endearing and exasperating that can make or break a book for me. Her books, including the iconic 'The Love Hypothesis' with its pink cover, and 'Love on the Brain,' have such a distinct romance book aesthetic. Think academia, science labs, enemies-to-lovers, grumpy x sunshine, and forced proximity tropes. It's a very specific brand of contemporary romance, often with a 'smart girl gets the hot, brooding scientist' vibe. If you're squarely in that STEMinist romance niche, you're likely all in. But if you prefer something less academic or with different core tropes, I can totally see why it might not click. I personally adore a good enemies-to-lovers setup, but sometimes the execution can feel a bit... intense. And let's talk about the 'spice level' – a hot topic in romance novels! From what I've read, Ali Hazelwood's books generally fall into the medium-to-high spice category. They're definitely not closed-door, but they also aren't solely focused on explicit scenes. There's usually a good build-up of tension and chemistry, and when the spice happens, it's typically integrated into the plot rather than feeling gratuitous. For 'Love on the Brain,' I'd say it has some steamy moments, but the focus remains strongly on the intellectual banter and emotional connection, which I appreciate. Something I do appreciate about her stories, even if I struggle with other aspects, is the subtle way she touches on mental health struggles. Often, her characters deal with anxiety, imposter syndrome, or past traumas that subtly influence their present actions and relationships. While it's not always the central theme, it adds a layer of depth to their personalities and makes them feel a bit more real and complex. It's usually handled with care, showing how these struggles impact their careers and personal lives, which I think is a positive contribution to the genre. Ultimately, whether you love or DNF Ali Hazelwood really comes down to personal taste in writing style, character types, and preferred tropes. Her books clearly resonate with so many people, but it's totally valid if they don't quite hit the mark for you. There are so many amazing romance authors out there, and finding what you love is part of the fun!
