New Chapter: Moving Out is Scary

- So much has happened lately for me. I moved from South Florida to central Florida (which I know “isn’t far” but that’s how I feel). A big contributor to my anxiety was the idea that I wasn’t “good enough”, and the shame and guilt that came with leaving my family. If you’re Latina you know how you can sleep over other peoples houses because, “Tu nunca sabe”, so this is a WILD change. But now it’s here, and I’m moved into my apartment. And it’s a crazy daunting feeling- this mix of awesome independence, and also guilt and worry.

- I’ve gone through the cycle (being here almost two months now) of becoming depressed & anxious, then ‘bouts’ of joy and excitement. So, I’m breaking out of this cycle. I know that my feelings are valid- and anyone else out there reading this, your feelings are too.

-<3 much love

... Read moreStepping into a new chapter, especially when it involves moving out on your own, can feel incredibly daunting. I totally get it – that mix of excitement for independence and the heavy weight of guilt and anxiety? It's real. My own journey from South Florida has been a rollercoaster, and if you're a 2nd Gen Latina like me, the emotional layer of leaving family can be especially intense. But here's what I've learned, and what I want to share with anyone else navigating this scary, yet beautiful, transition: First, validate your feelings. Seriously, it’s okay to put pressure on oneself, but it's even more okay to acknowledge that what you're experiencing is totally normal. Whether it's anxiety about handling new responsibilities, or the deep-seated guilt of stepping away from family expectations, these feelings are valid. Don't suppress them. Instead, try journaling them out, or talking to a trusted friend or family member. Even if they're far away, maintaining those connections can be a huge comfort. Remember, your feelings of adjustment are normal, and embracing vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. Next, let's talk about adjusting to new responsibilities. This is where the practical side of moving out often hits hardest. Suddenly, you're the one managing bills, grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning. It can feel crazy and overwhelming! My advice? Tackle it in small steps. Create a simple budget, plan out some easy meals for the week, and set aside specific times for chores. Don't aim for perfection right away. Remember, you're learning. And if you're struggling, reach out for advice. There are tons of online resources, or even friends who have been through it, who can offer tips. It's all part of starting fresh and building your own life. For those of us navigating cultural expectations, particularly around family, the guilt can be profound. I know for me, the idea of not being "good enough" or letting my family down was a huge anxiety trigger. What helped me was reframing my independence not as abandonment, but as growth. It’s about building your life while still cherishing your roots. Open communication, even if it's tough, can work wonders. Explain that you're not moving away from them, but moving towards your own path. Reassure them you'll stay connected, and then follow through. Finding that balance is key. Building a new routine and finding your footing takes time. You might go through cycles of feeling happy and then suddenly feeling down, just like I did. That's part of the process. Seek out new social groups, explore your new neighborhood, and find activities that bring you joy. Little things, like setting up your space with personal touches (maybe a plant like the one near my cat in the kitchen!), can make your new place feel more like home. Don't be afraid to lean on the support received from others, whether it's new friends or old ones checking in. Crucially, be patient and kind to yourself. This is a monumental change, and it’s okay to have moments of doubt or sadness. Every challenge you overcome builds resilience. Keep reminding yourself of why you made this move – whether it's for independence, a new job, or personal growth. Focus on the positive aspects of this new chapter. Ultimately, remember this: life is crazy and overwhelming sometimes, but YOU WILL BE OKAY! You are capable, resilient, and this journey, while challenging, is also incredibly empowering. Be patient with yourself, celebrate your small victories, and trust your path. This new chapter is yours to write, and you're doing great.
